Zarani Ba'da al-Jafa Zabyu an-Nujud

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Zāranī baʿda al-jafā ẓabyu an-nujūdi, ʿanbariyyu al-ʿarfi wardiyyu al-khudūdi

After estrangement, the gazelle of the uplands visited me, scented with ambergris, rosy of cheek,

Wasaqāniy min raḥīqin fī al-badīdi, Washafā bi-al-multaqā qalba al-ʿamīdi

And gave me nectar to drink in the wilderness, and healed the lovesick heart by meeting.

Qultu ahlan yā ghazāla ar-raqmatayni, Anta qurratu khāṭiriy ayḍan waʿaynī

I said: "Welcome, O gazelle of al-Raqmatayn! You are the delight of my mind and of my eye.

Lā taʿaddī yā suwayjī al-muqlatayni, Hakadhā tarʿā dhimāmī waʿuhūdī

Do not stray far, O little one with dark eyes; keep my bond and my pledges like this."

Aqbalat lī ḥīna aqbalta al-bashāʾir, Bi-al-ʾamānī wa-al-munā yā ẓabya ʿāmir

When you came, glad tidings came to me with hopes and wishes, O gazelle of 'Amir.

Kam wakam liy min marāmin wamarāmir, Fīka yā durrī al-mabāsim wa-al-ʿuqūdi

How many, many aims and desires I have in you, O you of pearly smiles and necklaces!

Yā qaḍīban yatamāyal fī kathībi, ʿindamā habbat lahu rīḥu al-janūbi

O branch swaying on a dune when the south wind blows upon it,

ʿud ilaynā lā takhaf qawla ar-raqībi, Yā masarrātī matā mā ʿāda ʿūdī

Return to us, do not fear the watcher's words; O my joy, whenever you come back to me!

Yā raʿā Allāhu layālin bi-al-maʿāhid, Niltu fīhā mā urajjīhi wazāʾid

May Allah protect nights at the familiar haunts in which I attained all I hoped for and more.

Hal tarā ʿayshan taqaḍḍā thamma ʿāʾid, In waʾillā bi-al-bukā yā ʿaynu jūdī

Do you think a life that has passed will return there? If not, then weep generously, O my eye.

Inna lī fī Allāhi ʾāmālan ṭawīlah, Waẓunūnan ḥasanah fīhi jamīlah

I have long hopes in Allah, and beautiful, good expectations of Him.

Laysa lī fī nayli mā arjū wasīlah, Ghayra ṭaha al-muṣṭafā zayni al-wujūdi

I have no means to attain what I hope for except Taha, the Chosen One, the adornment of existence.

From the dīwān of Imam ʿAbdallāh ibn ʿAlawī al-Ḥaddād (d. 1132 AH / 1720 CE), al-Durr al-Manẓūm, printed edition Dār al-Ḥāwī, Beirut 1423/2002, pp. 186–188. Strophic poem: 6 stanzas of 2 lines.
