Ya Sakinin Na'man

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Yā sākinīn naʿmān, ʿaṭfan ʿalā al-makrūb

O dwellers of Na'man, have pity on the grief-stricken,

Al-hāʾimi al-walhān, Adh-dhāhili al-maghlūb

The distraught and lovesick one, bewildered and overcome,

Man damʿuhu shannān, Fī khaddihi maskūb

Whose tears stream and pour down his cheek

Min furqati al-ʾawṭān, Wa-ash-shādini ar-ruʿbūb

From parting with his homeland and with the tender young fawn,

Dhāka al-ladhī ḥubbuh, Fī muhjatī sākin

The one whose love dwells in my heart,

Wabughyatī qurbuh, Wa-al-kullu luh rākin

Whose nearness is my desire, on whom everything relies.

Allāhu yusriʿ buh, Lilshshayyiqi as-sāhin

May Allah hasten him to the yearning, sleepless one,

Taskun bihi al-ʾashjān, Wayaḥṣulu al-maṭlūb

That sorrows may be stilled by him and the goal be attained.

Matā matā yā ṣāḥ, Tuqḍā lanā al-ʾawṭār

When, when, my friend, will our wishes be fulfilled,

Min rāḥati al-ʾarwāḥ, Unsi al-ḥimā wa-al-jār

The repose of spirits, the intimacy of the sanctuary and its neighbour,

Watakmulu al-ʾafrāḥ, Watanjalī al-ʾakdār

And joys be made complete, and troubles cleared away?

Yā rabbi yā raḥman, Farrij ʿalā al-maḥnūb

O Lord, O Most Merciful, grant relief to the one in hardship,

Wajbur lahu kasrah, Waṣliḥ lahu amrah

Mend his brokenness, set his affairs right,

Waṭliq lahu asrah, Washraḥ lahu ṣadrah

Free him from his captivity, open his breast,

Washdud lahu azrah, Waghfir lahu wizrah

Strengthen his back, and forgive his burden.

Yā dāʾima al-ʾiḥsān, Shukrak ʿalaynā dūb

O You whose kindness is everlasting, our thanks to You are constant.

From the dīwān of Imam ʿAbdallāh ibn ʿAlawī al-Ḥaddād (d. 1132 AH / 1720 CE), al-Durr al-Manẓūm, printed edition Dār al-Ḥāwī, Beirut 1423/2002, pp. 67–70. Strophic poem: 4 stanzas of 4 lines.
