Ya Sahi Qalbi Ma Sala wa-La Tab

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Yā ṣāḥi qalbī mā salā walā ṭāb, Min baʿdi mā fāraq rubūʿa al-ʾaḥbāb

My friend, my heart has found no solace and no joy since it left the dwellings of the beloveds,

Waḥalla bayna al-bādiyah wa-al-ʾajnāb, Wa-al-buʿdu ʿan ullāfihi wa-al-ʾaṣḥāb

And alighted between the desert and strangers, far from its intimates and companions.

Raʿā Allāhu awqāta al-wiṣāl yā ṣāḥ, Ayyāma kunnā fī surūr waʾafrāḥ

May Allah protect the times of union, my friend, the days when we were in joy and delight,

Nusqā bikāsāti al-hanā mina ar-rāḥ, Mā nakhtashī massa an-naṣab wa-al-ʾawṣāb

Given to drink from the cups of bliss, of wine, fearing no touch of fatigue or pain.

Yā saʿdu sir bī naḥwa rabʿi ḥibbī, Fa-ash-shawqu qad qaṭṭaʿ niyāṭa qalbī

O Sa'd, take me toward the dwelling of my beloved, for longing has cut the strings of my heart.

Falaysa yubrid ḥarra nāri karbī, Illā nuzūliy bayna tilka al-ʾaṭnāb

Nothing will cool the heat of my grief's fire but alighting among those tent ropes.

Allāhu jārī min jafā al-ḥabāyib, Innuh muṣībah dūnahā al-maṣāyib

Allah protect me from the harshness of the beloveds, for it is a calamity beside which all calamities are small.

Fahal tarā taṣfū liya al-mashārib, Min baʿdi ṭūli al-buʿdi wa-at-tighrāb

Do you think my drinking places will grow pure again after long distance and exile?

Arjū ilahī dhā al-karam wa-al-ʾafḍāl, Yaftaḥ ʿalā qalbī saniyya al-ʾaḥwāl

I hope that my God, Lord of generosity and bounty, will open to my heart the most sublime states

Mimmā manaḥ awtādahā wa-al-ʾabdāl, Waʾaghwāthahā waʾafrādahā wa-al-ʾaqṭāb

Of what He granted the pegs and the substitutes, the succours, the solitary ones and the poles.

Ūlaʾika al-ʾaqwām hum murādī, Wamaṭlabī min jumlati al-ʿibādi

Those people are my desire, and my aim among all of Allah's servants.

Waḥubbuhum qad ḥalla fī fuʾādī, Ahlu al-maʿārif wa-aṣ-ṣafā wa-al-ʾādāb

Love for them has settled in my heart, the people of gnosis, purity and refinement,

Al-mukhliṣūna aṣ-ṣādiqūn al-ʾabrār, Aṭ-ṭayyibūna aṭ-ṭāhirūn al-ʾakhyār

The sincere, the truthful, the righteous, the good, the pure, the chosen,

Al-ʿārifūn adh-dhāʾiqūn al-ʾaḥrār, Al-kullu minhum mukhbitun waʾawwāb

The knowers, those who have tasted, the free; every one of them humble and ever turning to Allah.

Yā Allāh bidharrah min maḥabbati Allāh, Afnā bihā ʿan kulli mā siwā Allāh

O Allah, grant me an atom of the love of Allah by which I pass away from all that is other than Allah,

Walā arā min baʿdihā siwā Allāh, Al-wāḥidi al-maʿbūd rabbi al-ʾarbāb

And after it see nothing but Allah, the One, the Worshipped, the Lord of lords.

Famā urajjī al-yawm kashfa kurbah, Illā n ṣafā liy mashrabu al-maḥabbah

I hope for no relief from grief today unless the drink of love becomes pure for me,

Waniltu min rabbī riḍan waqurbah, Yakūnu fīhā qaṭʿu kulli al-ʾasbāb

And I attain from my Lord good pleasure and nearness in which all other ties are cut,

ʿalā bisāṭi al-ʿilmi wa-al-ʿibādah, Wa-al-ghaybu ʿindī ṣāra ka-ash-shahādah

On the carpet of knowledge and worship, and the unseen becomes for me like the seen.

Hadhā laʿamrī muntahā as-saʿādah, Subḥāna rabbī man rajāh mā khāb

This, by my life, is the summit of happiness; glory be to my Lord: whoever hopes in Him is never disappointed.

Yā ṭāliba at-taḥqīqi qum wabādir, Wanhaḍ ʿalā sāqi al-himam wakhāṭir

O seeker of realisation, rise and hasten; stand firm on resolve and take the risk.

Waṣbir ʿalā qamʿi al-hawā waṣābir, Waṣduq walā tabraḥ mulāzima al-bāb

Be patient in subduing desire and persevere; be truthful, and never cease clinging to the door.

Waʿlam biʾanna al-khayra kulluh ajmaʿ, Ḍimna ttibāʿak lilnnabiyyi al-mushaffaʿ

And know that all good, all of it, lies in following the Prophet whose intercession is granted.

Ṣallā ʿalayhi Allāhu mā tashaʿshaʿ, Fajrun wamā sālat suyūlu al-ʾashʿāb

May Allah bless him as long as dawn breaks, and the torrents flow through the ravines.

From the dīwān of Imam ʿAbdallāh ibn ʿAlawī al-Ḥaddād (d. 1132 AH / 1720 CE), al-Durr al-Manẓūm, printed edition Dār al-Ḥāwī, Beirut 1423/2002, pp. 71–76. Strophic poem: 13 stanzas of 2 lines.
