Ya Nafsu Hadha adh-Dhi Ta'tinahu Ajab

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Yā nafsu hadhā al-ladhī taʾtīnahu ʿajabu, ʿilmun waʿaqlun walā nuskun walā adabu

O soul, what you are doing is strange: knowledge and intellect, yet no devotion and no refinement.

Waṣfu an-nifāqi kamā fī an-naṣṣi nasmaʿuhu, ʿilmu al-lisāni wajahlu al-qalbi wa-as-sababu

The mark of hypocrisy, as we hear in the sacred text, is knowledge of the tongue and ignorance of the heart; and its cause

Ḥubbu al-matāʿi waḥubbu al-jāhi fantabihī, Min qabli tuṭwā ʿalayki aṣ-ṣuḥfu wa-al-kutubu

Is love of worldly goods and love of status. So wake up before the pages and the books are folded upon you,

Watuṣbiḥīna biqabrin lā anīsa bihi, Al-ʾahlu wa-aṣ-ṣaḥbu lammā alḥadū dhahabū

And you find yourself in a grave with no companion; family and friends, once they laid you in the tomb, departed,

Wakhallafūki wamā aslafti min ʿamalin, Al-mālu mustaʾkharun wa-al-kasbu muṣṭaḥabu

And left you with whatever deeds you sent ahead: wealth stays behind, but what you earned goes with you.

Wastayqinī anna baʿda al-mawti mujtamaʿan, Lilʿālamīna fataʾtī al-ʿujmu wa-al-ʿarabu

Be certain that after death there is a gathering for all the worlds; the non-Arabs and the Arabs will come,

Wa-al-khalqu ṭurran wayajzīhim bimā ʿamilū, Fī yawmi lā yanfaʿu al-ʾamwālu wa-al-ḥasabu

All creation together, and He will repay them for what they did, on a Day when neither wealth nor lineage avails.

Wakhshay rujūʿan ilā ʿadlin tawaʿʿada man, Lā yattaqīhi binārin ḥashwuhā al-ghaḍabu

Fear a return to a Justice who has threatened whoever does not fear Him with a Fire filled with wrath,

Waqūduhā an-nāsu wa-al-ʾaḥjāru ḥāmiyatan, Lā tanṭafī abada al-ʾābādi taltahibu

Whose fuel is men and stones, blazing, never extinguished, burning forever and ever,

Wa-al-buʿda ʿan jannati al-khuldi al-latī ḥushiyat, Bi-aṭ-ṭayyibāti walā mawtun walā naṣabu

And fear distance from the Garden of Eternity, which is filled with good things, where there is no death and no toil.

Fīhā al-fawākihu wa-al-ʾanhāru jāriyatun, Wa-an-nūru wa-al-ḥūru wa-al-wildānu wa-al-qubabu

In it are fruits and flowing rivers, light, houris, youths and domes.

Wahadhihi ad-dāru dārun lā baqāʾa lahā, Lā yaftinannaki minhā al-warqu wa-adh-dhahabu

This abode is an abode without permanence; do not let its silver and its gold beguile you,

Wa-al-ʾahlu wa-al-mālu wa-al-markūbu tarkabuhu, Wa-ath-thawbu talbasuhu fa-al-kullu yanqalibu

Nor family, wealth, the mount you ride or the robe you wear, for all of it will pass away.

Lā bāraka Allāhu fī ad-dunyā siwā ʿaraḍin, Minhā yuʿaddu idhā mā ʿuddati al-qurabu

May Allah bless nothing of this world except the goods counted among the deeds that draw one near,

Yurīdu ṣāḥibuhu wajha al-ʾilahi bihi, Dūna ar-riyā innahu at-talbīsu wa-al-kadhibu

By which their owner seeks the Face of Allah, without showing off, for that is deception and falsehood.

Lā yaqbalu Allāhu aʿmālan yurīdu bihā, ʿāmiluhā ghayra wajhi Allāhi fajtanibū

Allah does not accept deeds by which their doer seeks anything other than His Face; so avoid it.

Tammat waṣallū ʿalā al-mukhtāri sayyidinā, Wa-al-ʾāli wa-aṣ-ṣaḥbi qawmun ḥubbuhum yajibu

It is complete; now send blessings on the Chosen One, our master, his family and his Companions, a people whom it is a duty to love.
