Ya Muntaha al-Amal

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Yā muntahā al-ʾāmāl, Wamaqṣida aṭ-ṭullāb

O utmost of all hopes, and goal of the seekers,

ʿabduk ḍaʿīfu al-ḥāl, Al-khāʾifu al-murtāb

Your servant, weak in state, fearful and full of doubt,

Atāka khālī al-bāl, ʿan jumlati al-ʾaḥbāb

Has come to You with his mind emptied of all other loved ones.

Ḍāqat bihi al-ʾaḥwāl, Wakhānati al-ʾasbāb

His circumstances have grown narrow, and all means have failed him.

Lam yadri mā yaṣnaʿ, Min shiddati al-ḥayrah

He does not know what to do from the depth of his bewilderment.

ʿumruh maḍā ajmaʿ, Fī as-saʿyi wa-ad-dawrah

His whole life has passed in striving and wandering about,

Wa-al-waqta qad ḍayyaʿ, Fī khidmati aṣ-ṣūrah

And he has wasted his time in serving outward forms.

Wa-al-ʾān qalbuh māl, Ilā luzūmi al-bāb

And now his heart has inclined to clinging to the door,

Waṣarfi hammi as-sirr, ʿan khidmati al-ʾajsām

And turning the concern of his inmost self away from serving bodies,

Maʿa ʿtināqi al-birr, Wa-at-tarki lilʾāthām

Embracing righteousness and abandoning sins.

Yā rabbanā yassir, Lahu al-ladhī qad rām

O our Lord, make easy for him what he has sought,

Yā dāʾima al-ʾifḍāl, Yā barru yā tawwāb

O You whose bounty is everlasting, O Most Kind, O Ever-Relenting.

From the dīwān of Imam ʿAbdallāh ibn ʿAlawī al-Ḥaddād (d. 1132 AH / 1720 CE), al-Durr al-Manẓūm, printed edition Dār al-Ḥāwī, Beirut 1423/2002, pp. 77–79. Strophic poem: 3 stanzas of 4 lines.
