Tafidu Uyuni bi-d-Dumu'i as-Sawakib

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Tafīḍu ʿuyūnī bi-ad-dumūʿi as-sawākibi, Wamā liya lā abkī ʿalā khayri dhāhibi

My eyes overflow with streaming tears; how could I not weep for the best of things departed?

ʿalā al-ʿumri idh wallā waḥāna nqiḍāʾuhu, Biʾāmāli maghrūrin waʾaʿmāli nākibi

For my life, now that it has turned away and its end draws near, with the hopes of the deluded and the deeds of one who strayed;

ʿalā ghurari al-ʾayyāmi lammā taṣarramat, Waʾaṣbaḥtu minhā rahna shuʾmi al-makāsibi

For the finest of days, now that they have passed, and I am left in pledge to the misfortune of my earnings;

ʿalā zaharāti al-ʿayshi lammā tasāqaṭat, Birīḥi al-ʾamānī wa-aẓ-ẓunūni al-kawādhibi

For the flowers of life, now that they have fallen in the wind of wishes and false assumptions;

ʿalā ashrafi al-ʾawqāti lammā ghubintuhā, Biʾaswāqi ghabnin bayna lāhin walāʿibi

For the noblest of times, now that I have squandered them in markets of loss, among those who amuse themselves and play;

ʿalā anfasi as-sāʿāti lammā aḍaʿtuhā, Waqaḍḍaytuhā fī ghaflatin wamaʿāṭibi

For the most precious hours, now that I have wasted them, spending them in heedlessness and ruin;

ʿalā ṣarfiya al-ʾanfāsa fī ghayri ṭāʾilin, Walā nāfiʿin min faḍli ʿilmin wawājibi

For spending my breaths on what is worthless, of no benefit in knowledge or in duty;

ʿalā mā tawallā min zamānin qaḍaytuhu, Wazajjaytuhu fī ghayri ḥaqqin waṣāʾibi

For the time that has gone, which I spent and whiled away in what was neither true nor right;

ʿalā furaṣin kānat walaw annanī ntahaz, Tuhā niltu fīhā min sharīfi al-maṭālibi

For opportunities that came, which, had I seized them, would have won me the noblest of aims;

Waʾaḥyāni ʾānāʾin mina ad-dahri qad maḍat, Ḍayāʿan wakānat mawsiman lilrraghāʾibi

And moments of time that have passed in waste, though they were a season for great rewards;

ʿalā ṣuḥufin mashḥūnatin bimaʾāthimin, Wajurmin waʾawzārin wakam min mathālibi

For pages crammed with sins, crimes and burdens, and so many vices;

ʿalā kam dhunūbin kam ʿuyūbin wazallatin, Wasayyiʾatin makhshiyyatin fī al-ʿawāqibi

For so many sins, so many faults and slips, and evil deeds whose consequences are to be feared;

ʿalā shahawātin kānati an-nafsu aqdamat, ʿalayhā biṭabʿin mustaḥiththin waghālibi

For desires into which my soul rushed with a nature that urged it on and overpowered it;

ʿalā annanī ʾāthartu dunyā daniyyatan, Munaghghaṣatan mashḥūnatan bi-al-maʿāyibi

For having preferred a lowly world, troubled and full of faults;

ʿalā ʿamalin lilʿilmi ghayri muwāfiqin, Wamā faḍlu ʿilmin dūna fiʿlin munāsibi

For deeds that did not accord with knowledge; what merit has knowledge without fitting deeds?

ʿalā fiʿli ṭāʿātin bighayri tawajjuhin, Wamin ghayri ikhlāṣin waqalbin murāqibi

For acts of obedience without true turning to Him, without sincerity or a watchful heart.

Uṣallī aṣ-ṣalāta al-khamsa wa-al-qalbu jāʾilun, Biʾawdiyati al-waswāsi min kulli jānibi

I perform the five prayers while my heart roams through the valleys of whispering on every side;

ʿalā annanī atlū al-qurāna kitābahu, Taʿālā biqalbin dhāhilin ghayri rāhibi

For reciting the Qur'an, His Book, exalted is He, with a distracted heart and without awe;

ʿalā annanī qad adhkuru Allāha khāliqī, Bighayri ḥuḍūrin lāzimin wamuṣāḥibi

For remembering Allah, my Creator, without constant and abiding presence;

ʿalā ṭūli ʾāmālin kathīrin ghurūruhā, Wanisyāni mawtin wahwa aqrabu ghāʾibi

For long hopes, so full of delusion, and forgetting death, though it is the nearest of absent things;

ʿalā annanī lā adhkuru al-qabra wa-al-bilā, Kathīran wasafran dhāhiban ghayra ʾāyibi

For rarely remembering the grave and decay, and a journey that departs never to return;

ʿalā annanī ʿan yawmi baʿthī wamaḥsharī, Waʿarḍī wamīzānī watilka al-maṣāʿibi

For, as to the Day of my resurrection and gathering, my presentation, my scales and all those hardships,

Mawāqifu min ahwālihā wakhuṭūbihā, Yashību mina al-wildāni shaʿru adh-dhawāʾibi

Stations whose terrors and calamities turn grey the locks of children,

Taghāfaltu ḥattā ṣirtu min farṭi ghaflatī, Kaʾannī lā adrī bitilka al-marāhibi

I feigned heedlessness until, from my excessive heedlessness, it is as though I knew nothing of those terrors;

ʿalā an-nāri annī mā hajartu sabīlahā, Walā khiftu min ḥayyātihā wa-al-ʿaqāribi

For the Fire: that I have not forsaken its path, nor feared its snakes and scorpions;

For my neglect of striving toward the Gardens, the abode of bliss and honour, nearness, and the fulfilment of hopes,

Mina al-ʿizzi wa-al-mulki al-mukhalladi wa-al-baqā, Wamā tashtahīhi an-nafsu min kulli ṭālibi

Of glory, everlasting dominion and permanence, and all that the soul desires of every wish;

Waʾakbaru min hadhā riḍā ar-rabbi ʿanhumu, Waruʾyatuhum iyyāhu min ghayri ḥājibi

And greater than this is the Lord's good pleasure with its people, and their seeing Him without any veil.

Faʾāhin ʿalā ʿayshi al-ʾaḥibbati nāʿiman, Haniyyan muṣaffan min jamīʿi ash-shawāʾibi

Ah, for the life of the beloved ones, blissful, wholesome, pure of every blemish!

Waʾāhin ʿalaynā fī ghurūrin waghaflatin, ʿani al-malaʾi al-ʾaʿlā waqurbi al-ḥabāyibi

And ah for us, deluded and heedless of the Highest Assembly and nearness to the beloveds!

Waʾāhin ʿalā mā fāta min hadyi sādatin, Wamin siyarin maḥmūdatin wamadhāhibi

And ah for what I have missed of the guidance of the masters, their praiseworthy lives and ways;

ʿalā mā lahum min himmatin waʿazīmatin, Wajiddin watashmīrin linayli al-marātibi

For their aspiration and resolve, their earnestness and readiness to attain the ranks;

ʿalā mā lahum min ʿiffatin wafutuwwatin, Wazuhdin watajrīdin waqaṭʿi al-jawādhibi

For their chastity and chivalry, their renunciation, detachment and cutting of worldly ties;

ʿalā mā lahum min ʿuzlatin wasiyāḥatin, Biqafri al-fayāfī wa-ar-rimāli as-sabāsibi

For their seclusion and wandering in the empty wastes and the vast sands;

ʿalā mā lahum fī ṣawmi kulli hajīratin, Wamin khalwatin billāhi taḥta al-ghayāhibi

For their fasting through every scorching midday, and their retreats alone with Allah beneath the darkness;

ʿalā aṣ-ṣabri wa-ash-shukri al-ladhayni taḥaqqaqū, Waṣidqin waʾikhlāṣin wakam min manāqibi

For the patience and gratitude they realised, and truthfulness, sincerity and so many virtues;

ʿalā mā ṣafā min qurbihim washuhūdihim, Wamā ṭāba min adhwāqihim wa-al-mashāribi

For the purity of their nearness and their witnessing, and the sweetness of their spiritual tastes and drinking places.

Fakam bifuʾādī min ghalīlin wamin asan, Wamin ḥasarātin mutʿibātin ghawālibi

How much burning thirst and grief is in my heart, and wearying, overwhelming regrets!

Wakam min dumūʿin fī al-khudūdi sawākibin, Tajūdu bihā suḥbu al-jufūni adh-dhawāʾibi

How many tears stream down my cheeks, poured by the clouds of my melting eyelids!

Walaw annanī abkī ad-dumūʿa wabaʿdahā al-, Ddimāʾa ʿalā mā fātanī yā muʿātibī

Even if I wept tears, and after them blood, over what I have missed, O you who reproach me,

Lakāna qalīlan fī kathīrin wamā ʿasā, Yaruddu al-bukā min dhāhibin ayyi dhāhibi

It would be little against much; and what can weeping bring back of what is gone, however it is gone?

Faʾastaghfiru Allāha al-ʿaẓīma jalāluhu, Waqudratuhu fī sharqihā wa-al-maghāribi

So I seek forgiveness from Allah the Mighty, whose majesty and power fill the East and the West.

Ilayhi matābī wahwa ḥasbī wamaljaʾī, Waliy amalun fī ʿaṭfihi ghayru khāʾibi

To Him is my repentance; He is my sufficiency and my refuge, and I have a hope in His kindness that will not be disappointed.

Waʾasʾaluhu at-tawfīqa fīmā baqiy limā, Yuḥibbu wayarḍā fahwa asnā al-maṭālibi

I ask Him for success, in what remains, in what He loves and is pleased with, for that is the loftiest of aims,

Waʾan yataghashshānā biʿafwin waraḥmatin, Wafaḍlin waʾiḥsānin wasatri al-maʿāyibi

And that He cover us with pardon and mercy, bounty, kindness, and the veiling of faults,

Waʾan yatawallānā biluṭfin waraʾfatin, Waḥifẓin yaqīnā sharra kulli al-maʿāṭibi

And that He take charge of us with gentleness and compassion, and a protection that guards us from the evil of every ruin,

Waʾan yatawaffānā ʿalā khayri millatin, ʿalā millati al-ʾislāmi khayri al-mawāhibi

And that He take us in death upon the best of faiths, the faith of Islam, the best of gifts,

Muqīmīna lilqurʾāni wa-as-sunnati al-latī, Atānā bihā ʿālī adh-dhurā wa-al-marātibi

Upholding the Qur'an and the Sunna brought to us by the one of the highest summit and ranks,

Muḥammadun al-hādī al-bashīru nabiyyunā, Wasayyidunā baḥru al-hudā wa-al-manāqibi

Muhammad, the guide, the bearer of glad tidings, our Prophet and our master, the ocean of guidance and virtues.

ʿalayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu, Waʾālin waʾaṣḥābin lahu ka-al-kawākibi

Upon him be the blessings of Allah and His peace, and upon his family and Companions, who are like the stars.
