Shughifa al-Muhibbu Bihubbi Zabyati Amir
Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad
Shughifa al-muḥibbu biḥubbi ẓabyati ʿāmiri, Waṣabā ilayhā bi-al-fuʾādi wanāẓiri
The lover is enamoured of the gazelle of 'Amir, yearning for her with heart and eye,
Maḥbūbatin maḥjūbatin illā ʿalā, Dhī ʿiffatin watuqan katūmin ṣābiri
Beloved, veiled except to one who is chaste, pious, discreet and patient,
Yarḍā mina ad-dunyā al-gharūri bibulghatin, Lā yattasiʿ fīhā ttisāʿa al-bāṭiri
Content with a bare sufficiency from the deceiving world, not living in it at ease like the insolent.
Tilka al-ghazālu al-ʿāmiriyyatu kam sabat, Waramat biʾashumi laḥẓi ṭarfin fātiri
That gazelle of 'Amir, how many she has captivated, shooting the arrows of a languid glance
Limutayyamin ḥilfi aṣ-ṣabābati wa-al-jawā, Yarʿā an-nujūma bijunḥi laylin dājiri
At an enthralled one, sworn ally of yearning and passion, watching the stars in the depths of a dark night!
Afdī suwaykinata an-naqā wamuḥajjarin, Bibaqiyyatin min rasmi jismin dāthiri
I ransom the little dweller of al-Naqa and Muhajjar with what remains of a wasted body's trace.
Man lī wahal lī an arāhā zāʾiran, Saḥaran waqad nāma ar-raqību al-ʿāthiri
Who will grant me, can I hope, to see her as a visitor before dawn, when the stumbling watcher sleeps?
Hiya bahjatī hiya wijhatī hiya qiblatī, Fī ḥīni asjudu lilʾilahi al-ghāfiri
She is my joy, my direction, my qibla when I prostrate to God, the Forgiving,
Liy walighayrī min aʾimmati madhhabī, Mimman taṣawwafa fī az-zamāni al-ghābiri
Mine and that of others among the imams of my way, those who followed the Sufi path in ages past,
Walighayrinā min ahli qiblatinā al-latī, Ṣallā ilayhā kullu ʿabdin dhākiri
And of others besides us among the people of our qibla, toward which every remembering servant has prayed,
Mutamassikin mutanassikin mutabattilin, Lillāhi fī iʿlānihi wasarāʾiri
Holding fast, devout, wholly devoted to Allah in public and in private.
Wa-al-ʾāna falnarqa ilā an nantahī, Fī al-ʿilmi wa-ar-rūḥi al-laṭīfi aṭ-ṭāʾiri
Now let us ascend until we reach the end in knowledge and in the subtle, soaring spirit,
Fanushāhidu al-ʾamlāka ḥawla ṣafīḥihā, Mustaqbilīna linaḥwi ʿarshi al-fāṭiri
And witness the angels around its heavens, facing toward the Throne of the Originator.
Subḥāna man ʿanati al-wujūhu liwajhihi, Bitadhallulin watakhashshuʿin wataṣāghuri
Glory be to Him before whose Face all faces are humbled in abasement, humility and lowliness,
Al-wāḥidi al-maliki al-jalīli taqaddasat, Awṣāfuhu ʿan qawli kulli mudābiri
The One, the King, the Majestic, whose attributes are holy beyond the words of all who turn their backs,
Min mushrikin aw shākikin mutaraddidin, Fī Allāhi wa-al-yawmi al-maʿādi al-ʾākhiri
Whether an idolater or a doubter wavering about Allah and the Last Day of Return.
ʾāmantu billāhi al-ʿaẓīmi wakutbihi, Warasūlihi al-hādī al-ʾamīni aṭ-ṭāhiri
I believe in Allah the Mighty and in His books, and in His Messenger, the guide, the trustworthy, the pure,
Khatmi an-nabiyyīna al-kirāmi jamīʿihim, Ṣallā ʿalayhi Allāhu ʿadda al-māṭiri
Seal of all the noble prophets; may Allah bless him as often as the rain falls,
Wa-al-ʾāli wa-aṣ-ṣaḥbi al-kirāmi watābiʿin, Min kulli awwāhin munībin shākiri
And his family, his noble Companions, and every follower, every one tender-hearted, turning to Allah, grateful.
