Nasamatu al-Hayyi Wahnan Idh Sarat

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Nasamātu al-ḥayyi wahnan idh sarat, Bishadhā najdin lirūḥī bashsharat

The breezes of the encampment, when they came by night with the scent of Najd, gave my spirit glad tidings

Biliqā suʿdā fayā lillāhi min, Nafsi ṣabbin ẓafirat idh ṣabarat

Of meeting Su'da; oh, by Allah, what a lover's soul, which triumphed because it was patient!

Hakadhā al-ʾamru falāzim wantaẓir, Min laṭīfi aṣ-ṣunʿi alṭāfan jarat

Such is the way: so persevere and wait for the kindnesses that flow from the One so subtle in His works.

Adhhabat ghamman wakarban khayyamā, Waʾaqāmā fī ṣudūrin ḥaṣirat

They removed the grief and distress that had camped and settled in constricted breasts.

Farju mawlāka walā tayʾas waʾin, Jalla khaṭbun waʾumūrun ʿasurat

So hope in your Master and do not despair, even if the calamity is great and matters have grown hard.

Inna lillāhi taʿālā majduhu, Nafaḥātin bi-ar-rajāʾi ntuẓirat

For Allah, exalted be His glory, has breaths of grace that are awaited with hope.

Wamaʿa al-ʿusri waʾin ṭāla al-madā, Fīhi yusrāni bisharḥin dhukirat

With hardship, however long it lasts, come two eases, as mentioned in al-Sharh.

Fajuyūshu al-ʿusri wallat duburan, Wajuyūshu al-yusri ḥaqqan nuṣirat

So the armies of hardship have turned and fled, and the armies of ease have truly been made victorious.

Farajun jāʾa bihi ar-raḥmanu man, Faḍluhu ʿanhu al-masāʿī qaṣurat

A relief brought by the Most Merciful, whose bounty is beyond the reach of all efforts.

Walahu al-ḥamdu ʿalā ʾālāʾihi, Waʾayādin baṭanat aw ẓaharat

To Him be praise for His blessings, and His favours, hidden or manifest,

Waʿalā luṭfin khafiyyin shāmilin, Wamunūḥin wafutūḥin baharat

And for a hidden, all-encompassing gentleness, and gifts and openings that dazzle,

Wanawāmīsa bihā ardā al-ʿidā, Wajalāhum bijunūdin qaharat

And the laws by which He destroyed the enemies and drove them out with conquering armies.

Fatijārātu al-hudā qad rabiḥat, Watijārātu ar-radā qad khasirat

The trades of guidance have made a profit, and the trades of ruin have suffered loss.

Wayḥa qawmin qad uqīmat fīhimu, Daʿwatu al-ḥaqqi al-latī qad shuhirat

Woe to a people among whom was established the call of truth, proclaimed far and wide,

Faghadaw lam yarfaʿū raʾsan bihā, ʿan nufūsin jahilat wastakbarat

Yet they did not raise their heads to it, because of souls that were ignorant and arrogant.

Niʿamun lillāhi kānat ʿindahum, Ḥuwwilat idh lam takun qad shukirat

Blessings of Allah that they possessed were changed, since they had not been thanked for.

Wakitābu Allāhi qad nabbahahum, Law talawhu biqulūbin ḥaḍarat

The Book of Allah had warned them, had they recited it with present hearts:

The verses of al-Anfal, al-Ra'd and al-Nahl; when they changed the blessings, the blessings were changed.

Niʿamun in shakarūhā baqiyat, Wanamat aw kafarūhā nafarat

Blessings remain if they are thanked for, and grow; if they are denied, they flee.

Jahilū ḥaqqan liqawmin baynahum, Min dhawī al-ḥaqqi budūrun asfarat

They ignored the right of a people among them, people of right, full moons who shone forth,

Min duʿāti al-khayri aʿlāmi al-hudā, Wa-an-nadā min ʿitratin qad ṭuhhirat

Callers to good, banners of guidance and generosity, from a family that has been purified.

Ẓalamūhā ḥaqqahā fastanṣarat, Birasūli Allāhi ḥattā nuṣirat

They wronged that family of its right, so it sought help through the Messenger of Allah until it was helped.

Jāʾa naṣru Allāhi wa-al-fatḥu maʿan, Wajunūdun wariyāḥun bashsharat

The help of Allah came, and the victory together, with armies, and winds that brought glad tidings,

Biʿaliyyi al-murtaḍā laythi al-waghā, Wabizahrāʾi al-ʿulā qad zaharat

Through 'Ali al-Murtada, the lion of battle, and through al-Zahra' of the heights, who shone,

Wabisibṭay aḥmadin wa-as-sayyidi al-, ʿābidi al-ʾawwāhi amdādun sarat

Through Ahmad's two grandsons, and the master who worshipped, the tender-hearted: reinforcements flowed;

Walladhī lilʿilmi yudʿā bāqiran, Minhu ghārātun lanā qad bakkarat

And the one called "al-Baqir" for his knowledge, from whom rescues came to us early;

Wa-al-ʾimāmi aṣ-ṣādiqi al-ʾustādhi lil, Fāṭimiyyīna bihi qad fakharat

And the imam al-Sadiq, the teacher, in whom the Fatimids took pride;

Wabimūsā waʿaliyyin najlihi, Wa-al-ʿurayḍī ʿammihi mā qaṣṣarat

And through Musa, and 'Ali his son, and al-'Uraydi his uncle: none fell short;

Wabni ʿīsā wabanīhi an-nujabā, Wabanīhim sādatun qad dhukirat

And Ibn 'Isa and his noble sons, and their sons, masters who are renowned.

Rabbi faḥfaẓnā bihim wanfaʿ bihim, Waʾaʿid min barakātin ghamarat

Lord, protect us through them, benefit us through them, and bring back the blessings that once overflowed.

Wakfinā yā rabbanā sharra al-ʿidā, Wa-al-ʾadhā min firqatin qad baṭirat

Suffice us, our Lord, against the evil of enemies, and the harm of a faction that has grown insolent.

Bahatūnā bimaqālin sayyiʾin, Kānati al-ʾukhrā bihi law abṣarat

They slandered us with evil words that they themselves deserved, had they eyes to see.

Qad ḥalumnā waṣafaḥnā ʿanhumu, Wabidhā aslāfunā qad akhbarat

We were forbearing and forgave them; so our forebears taught us.

Yaẓlimūnā thumma naʿfū ʿanhumu, Hakadhā al-faḍlu liqawmin qadarat

They wrong us, then we pardon them; such is the virtue of a people who have the power to repay.

Waṣalātu Allāhi daʾban sarmadan, Lirasūli Allāhi mā al-fulku jarat

And may Allah's blessings, constant and eternal, be upon the Messenger of Allah as long as the ships sail,

Wasarat arwāḥu najdin saḥaran, Washarā barqun wasuḥbun amṭarat

And the winds of Najd blow before dawn, and lightning flashes and the clouds pour rain,

Waʿalā al-ʾāli maʿa al-ʾaṣḥābi mā, Laylatun ʿan fajrihā qad asfarat

And upon the family and the Companions as long as a night gives way to its dawn.
