Marrat Lana bi-l-Hima al-Ma'nusi A'yad

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Marrat lanā bi-al-ḥimā al-maʾnūsi aʿyādu, Maʿa al-ʾaḥibbati law ʿādat walaw ʿādū

We had festivals in the familiar sanctuary with the beloveds; if only they would return, and they with them!

Kunnā qaḍaynā bihā al-ʾawṭāra fī daʿatin, Waṭībi ʿayshin famā kādat wamā kādū

There we fulfilled our wishes in ease and a sweet life; neither the days nor the people wronged us.

Annā waqad ḥālati al-ʾaqdāru dūnahumu, Fa-al-hammu mujtamiʿun wa-al-qawmu qad bādū

But how, when destiny has come between us and them? Worry is gathered, and the folk have passed away.

Hadhā az-zamānu wahadhā ad-dahru ʿādatuhu, Fīnā wafī ghayrinā baynun waʾankādu

Such is time, and such is the habit of the age with us and with others: parting and troubles.

Inna al-ḥawāditha lā tubqī ʿalā aḥadin, Walilkarīmi qanātun laysa tanʾādu

Misfortunes spare no one, but the noble have a spear-shaft that does not bend:

Steadfastness and patience, which fathers and grandfathers bequeathed to their sons before.

Namḍī ʿalā subulin kānū lahā salakū, Aslāfunā wahumu lillāhi ajnādu

We go on along paths that our forebears once travelled, and they were soldiers of Allah.

Mā zaʿzaʿathum yadu al-ʾayyāmi ḥīna saṭat, Wakayfa lā wahumu lilʾarḍi aṭwādu

The hand of the days did not shake them when it struck; how could it, when they were mountains for the earth?

Nabiyyunā waʿaliyyun wa-al-ḥusaynu wazay, Nu al-ʿābidīna bihadhā fī al-warā sādū

Our Prophet, 'Ali, al-Husayn and Zayn al-'Abidin became masters among mankind through this.

Lanā bihim uswatun idh hum aʾimmatunā, Wanaḥnu lilqawmi abnāʾun waʾaḥfādu

We have in them an example, for they are our imams, and we are the sons and grandsons of that folk.

Wa-aṣ-ṣabru yā nafsu khayrun kulluhu walahu, ʿawāqibun kulluhā nujḥun waʾimdādu

Patience, O soul, is all good, and it has outcomes that are all success and support.

Faṣbir hudīta faʾinna al-mawta mushtarakun, Bayna al-ʾanāmi waʾin ṭāwalna ʾāmādu

So be patient, may you be guided, for death is shared by all people, however long their spans may last.

Wa-an-nāsu fī ghafalātin ʿan maṣāriʿihim, Kaʾannahum wahumu al-ʾayqāẓu ruqqādu

People are heedless of their deaths, as though, though awake, they were asleep.

Dunyā taghurru waʿayshun kulluhu kadarun, Lawlā an-nufūsu al-latī lilwahmi tanqādu

A deceiving world, and a life all turbid, were it not for souls that are led by illusion.

Kunnā ʿadadnā lihadhā al-mawti ʿuddatahu, Qabla al-wafāti waʾan yuḥfarna alḥādu

We had prepared our provision for this death before passing away, before graves are dug.

Fa-ad-dāru min baʿdi hadhī ad-dāri ʾākhiratun, Tabqā dawāman bihā ḥashrun wamīʿādu

For the abode after this abode is the Hereafter, lasting forever, with a gathering and an appointed meeting,

Wajannatun uzlifat lilmuttaqīna waʾah, Li al-ḥaqqi wa-aṣ-ṣabri abdālun waʾawtādu

And a Garden brought near for the God-fearing and the people of truth and patience, the substitutes and the pegs.

Faʿmal linafsika min qabli al-mamāti walā, Taʿjaz wataksal faʾinna al-marʾa jahhādu

So work for yourself before death, and do not be feeble or lazy, for a man must strive.

Lā yanfaʿu al-ʿabda illā mā yuqaddimuhu, Fabādiri al-fawta waṣṭad qabla tuṣṭādu

Nothing benefits a servant but what he sends ahead; so outrun loss, and hunt before you are hunted.

Yā ṣāḥibī inna qalbī al-ʾāna muktaʾibun, Qad kāna ʿāwadahu mā kāna yaʿtādu

My friend, my heart is sorrowful now; what it used to feel has come back to it:

Tadhakkurun liʾuṣayḥābin qadi ntazaḥū, ʿannā tanāʾā bihim ghawrun waʾanjādu

The memory of dear companions who have gone far from us, separated by lowlands and highlands.

Kafā kafā ḥazanan anna az-zamāna maḍā, Wa-ash-shamlu muftariqun wa-al-jamʿu afrādu

Enough, enough of grief that time has passed, the company is scattered and the gathering has become single souls,

Mushattatūna biʾaṭrāfi al-bilādi ʿalā, Raghmi al-ʾunūfi kamā tahwāhu ḥussādu

Dispersed in the far corners of the lands against their will, just as the envious would wish,

Bayna al-ʾabāʿidi lā tadrī amāthiluhum, Mā ḥaqquhum wahumu jamʿun waʾaḥshādu

Among strangers whose leading men do not know what is owed to them, though they are a great host.

Lahfī ʿalā ghurabāʾi ad-dāri ḥīna thawaw, Walam yuṭīfū bihim ahlun waʿuwwādu

Alas for the strangers far from home when they were laid to rest, with no family or visitors to gather round them,

Min ʾāli ṭaha waʾāli al-murtaḍā wamina az-za, Hrā al-batūli liqaṣri al-majdi qad shādū

Of the family of Taha, of the family of al-Murtada, and of al-Zahra' the pure, who built the palace of glory,

Aʿizzatin fī adh-dhurā min hāshimin waʿani al-, Kitābi wa-as-sunnati al-gharrāʾi mā ḥādū

Noble ones at the summit of Hashim, who never swerved from the Book and the radiant Sunna.

Yamūtu mayyituhum min ḥaythu shāʾa faʾar, Ḍu Allāhi wāḥidatun wa-al-qawmu amjādu

Their dead die wherever He wills, for the earth of Allah is one, and the folk are glorious.

Abkīhimu bidumūʿin ʿalla sāʾilahā, Yabullu min jamarāti al-qalbi īqādu

I weep for them with tears, hoping their flow may dampen the blaze of my heart's embers,

Taḥassurun washujūnun kullamā lamaʿat, Burūqu kāẓimatin tanmū watazdādu

Regrets and sorrows that, whenever the lightning of Kazima flashes, grow and increase,

Wakullamā nāḥati al-warqā ʿalā ghuṣunin, Wakullamā khafaqat bi-al-wādi anwādu

And whenever the grey dove moans upon a branch, and whenever the blossoms of the valley flutter.

Fayā biʿaydīda bashshāra al-bashāʾiri hal, Wāfat ʿalā al-yumni ikhwānun waʾawlādu

O Bashshar of good tidings at 'Idid, have brothers and sons arrived in good fortune,

Arwāḥuhum wanufūsun kāna fāraqahā, Bi-al-qabḍi lillāhi ajsāmun waʾajsādu

Their spirits and souls, which bodies and frames parted from when Allah took them,

Bānū ʿani al-ʾahli wa-al-ʾawṭāni min zamanin, Wakāna min wuddihim law annahum ʿādū

Who left family and homeland long ago, and would have loved to return?

Faʿawwaqathum maqādīrun muqaddaratun, Maḥtūmuhā mā lahu dafʿun walā rādu

But decrees that were ordained held them back, decrees whose sealed course none can avert or turn aside,

Mithlu ash-shaqīqi wabni al-ʿammi fī zumarin, Ṭābat khalāʾiquhum wa-as-saʿyu wa-az-zādu

Like my brother and my cousin, among companies whose character, striving and provision were good,

Mina al-ladhīna biʿilmi ad-dīni qad ʿamilū, Wastaghraqathum ʿibādātun waʾawrādu

Of those who acted upon the knowledge of religion, immersed in acts of worship and litanies,

Duʿāti khayrin hudātin muhtadīna riḍan, Min sādatin mā lahum fī al-faḍli andādu

Callers to good, guides, rightly guided, well pleasing, from masters who have no equals in excellence.

Ḥadā bihim hādhimu al-ladhdhāti fanṭalaqū, Ilā maṣīrin bihi fawzun waʾisʿādu

The destroyer of pleasures drove them on, so they set out to a destination of triumph and happiness:

Barāzikhu an-nūri dihlīzu al-jināni mina al-, Firdawsi wa-al-ʿadni yā lillāhi mā fādū

The barzakh of light, the antechamber of the Gardens of Firdaws and 'Adn. By Allah, what they have gained!

Fa-al-mawtu lilmuʾmini al-ʾawwābi tuḥfatuhu, Wafīhi kullu al-ladhī yabghī wayartādu

For death is the gift of the believer who turns to Allah, and in it is all he seeks and longs for:

Liqā al-karīmi taʿālā majduhu wasamā, Maʿa an-naʿīmi al-ladhī mā fīhi ankādu

Meeting the Generous One, exalted and sublime His glory, with a bliss in which there is no trouble.

Faḍlun mina Allāhi iḥsānun wamarḥamatun, Fa-al-faḍlu lillāhi ka-al-ʾāzāli ʾābādu

A favour from Allah, a kindness and a mercy; for favour belongs to Allah from pre-eternity to eternity.

Fa-aẓ-ẓannu billāhi mawlānā wasayyidinā, Ẓannun jamīlun maʿa al-ʾanfāsi yazdādu

Our thought of Allah, our Master and our Lord, is a beautiful thought that grows with every breath.

Narjūhu yarḥamunā narjūhu yajburunā, Fahwa al-jawādu al-ladhī bi-al-jūdi ʿawwādu

We hope He will have mercy on us, we hope He will mend us, for He is the Generous who returns again and again with generosity.

Narjūhu yanẓurunā narjūhu yasturunā, Faminhu lilkulli imdādun waʾījādu

We hope He will look upon us, we hope He will veil us, for from Him comes support and existence to all.

Nadʿūhu nasʾaluhu ʿafwan wamaghfiratan, Maʿ ḥusni khātimatin fa-al-ʿumru naffādu

We call on Him and ask Him for pardon and forgiveness, with a good end, for life soon runs out.

Waqad raḍīnā qaḍāʾa Allāhi kayfa qaḍā, Wa-al-luṭfa narjū waḥusnu aṣ-ṣabri irshādu

We are content with Allah's decree however He decrees, and we hope for His gentleness, and beautiful patience is right guidance.

Thumma aṣ-ṣalātu ʿalā al-hādī waʿitratihi, Muḥammadin mā nthanat bi-ar-rīḥi aʿwādu

Then blessings be upon the guide and his family, Muhammad, as long as the branches bend in the wind,

Wamā sarat nasamātu al-ḥayyi fī saḥarin, Wakāna minhā liḥarri ash-shajwi ibrādu

And as long as the breezes of the encampment travel at dawn, bringing coolness to the heat of sorrow.
