Ma Taba Qalbi wa-La Fu'adi
Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad
Mā ṭāba qalbī walā fuʾādī, Min baʿdi mā ghibtu ʿan bilādī
My heart and soul have found no joy since I went away from my homeland.
Kayfa as-suluwwu waqad tanāʾā, ʿannī ḥabībī maʿa ruqādī
How can I find solace, when my beloved has gone far from me, and my sleep with him?
Lā astarīḥu walā yudānī, Qalbī as-surūru maʿa al-biʿādi
I find no rest, and joy does not come near my heart in distance.
Walā bariḥtu ḥalīfa ḥuznin, Uqaḍḍī al-waqta bi-an-nakādi
I have never ceased to be sorrow's companion, spending my time in misery.
Allāhu yashfī ghalīla shawqī, Birashfiya ath-thaghra min suʿādi
May Allah heal the burning thirst of my longing by my sipping from Su'ad's lips,
Waḥaṭṭiya ar-raḥla fī ḥimāhā, Fī khayri rabʿin wakhayri nādī
And by my setting down my saddle in her sanctuary, in the best of dwellings and the best of gatherings,
Wafityatin mā lahum humūmun, Walā at-tifātun ilā al-ʿibādi
Among young men who have no worries, and pay no attention to people.
Qad jarradū al-qaṣda ḥīna nūdū, Bikhalʿi naʿlin fī khayri wādī
They made their aim single when they were called to take off their sandals in the best of valleys.
Lillāhi lillāhi min rijālin, Sārū ʿalā manhaji ar-rashādi
How wondrous, by Allah, are the men who travelled the road of right guidance,
Ḥattā ntahaw fī al-ʿulā waghābū, ʿan kulli ḥāḍir wakulli bādī
Until they reached the heights and vanished from every townsman and every nomad!
Yā hal liqalbī wahal lirūḥī, Yawman wuṣūlun ilā al-murādi
Oh, will my heart and my spirit one day reach their desire?
Wahal yajūdu az-zamānu waqtan, Bi-ash-shurbi min manhali al-widādi
Will time be generous for a while, letting me drink from the spring of love,
Min qabli an tanqaḍī ḥayātī, Wayaʾdhana al-ʿumru bi-an-nafādi
Before my life comes to an end, and my days announce that they have run out?
Amūtu yā sādatī baʿīdan, ʿankum ẓamʾāna al-fuʾādi ṣādī
I am dying, my masters, far from you, with a thirsting, parched heart.
Ḥāshākumu yā ḥulūla najdin, Min qaṭʿi man yasmaʿu al-munādī
Far be it from you, O dwellers of Najd, to cut off one who hears the caller,
Wayatruku al-kulla fī hawākum, Walā yubālī biman yuʿādī
And leaves everything for love of you, caring nothing for whoever shows enmity.
Innī laʾarjū ʿawāṭifa Allāhi, Al-muḥsini al-mufḍili al-jawādi
I hope for the kindnesses of Allah, the Benevolent, the Bountiful, the Generous.
Subḥānahu jalla min karīmin, Qad ʿamma bi-al-faḍli wa-al-ʾayādī
Glory be to Him, how majestic a Generous One, whose bounty and favours embrace all!
