مَا لِلْفُؤَادِ يَفِيضُ بِالأَكْدَارِ

مَا لِلْفُؤَادِ يَفِيضُ بِالأَكْدَارِوَكَأَنَّ فِيهِ تَلَهُّباً مِنْ نَارِ

Mā lilfuʾādi yafīḍu bi-al-ʾakdāri, Wakaʾanna fīhi talahhuban min nāri

What is wrong with my heart, overflowing with troubles, as though a fire were blazing within it,

وَلِمُقْلَةٍ عَبْرَى تَفِيضُ دُمُوعُهَاسَحّاً كَفَيْضِ الوَابِلِ المِدْرَارِ

Walimuqlatin ʿabrā tafīḍu dumūʿuhā, Saḥḥan kafayḍi al-wābili al-midrāri

And with a weeping eye whose tears pour in torrents like the flood of a heavy downpour,

حُزْناً عَلَى الأَحْبَابِ لَمَّا فَارَقُواوَتَرَحَّلُوا عَنْ مَرْبَعِي وَجِوَارِي

Ḥuznan ʿalā al-ʾaḥbābi lammā fāraqū, Wataraḥḥalū ʿan marbaʿī wajiwārī

In grief for the beloveds when they parted and departed from my dwelling and my neighbourhood,

وَسَرَتْ بِهِمْ نُجُبُ الرَّكَائِبِ تَرْتَمِيوَتَؤُمُّ دَاراً بُورِكَتْ مِنْ دَارِ

Wasarat bihim nujubu ar-rakāʾibi tartamī, Wataʾummu dāran būrikat min dāri

And noble camels carried them by night, speeding toward an abode, how blessed an abode!

هَذَا الَّذِي بَعَثَ الشُّجُونَ وَهَاجَهَاوَأَصَارَنِي لَا يَسْتَقِرُّ قَرَارِي

Hadhā al-ladhī baʿatha ash-shujūna wahājahā, Waʾaṣāranī lā yastaqirru qarārī

This is what aroused my sorrows and stirred them, and left me unable to settle.

يَا حَسْرَتِي مِنْ بُعْدِهِمْ يَا لَوْعَتِييَا طُولَ حُزْنِي لِانْتِزَاحِ مَزَارِي

Yā ḥasratī min buʿdihim yā lawʿatī, Yā ṭūla ḥuznī lintizāḥi mazārī

O my regret at their distance! O my anguish! O my long grief that the place I would visit is so far!

يَا كُرْبَتِي يَا غُرْبَتِي يَا وَحْدَتِييَا وَحْشَتِي يَا حَيْرَتِي بِقِفَارِ

Yā kurbatī yā ghurbatī yā waḥdatī, Yā waḥshatī yā ḥayratī biqifāri

O my distress, my exile, my loneliness, my desolation, my bewilderment in the wastes!

لَهْفِي عَلَى ظَبْيِ النَّقَا وَمُحَجَّرٍوَغَزَالِ نَجْدٍ مُنْتَهَى أَوْطَارِي

Lahfī ʿalā ẓabyi an-naqā wamuḥajjarin, Waghazāli najdin muntahā awṭārī

Alas for the gazelle of al-Naqa and Muhajjar, and the fawn of Najd, the utmost of my wishes,

مِسْكِيَّةِ الأَعْرَافِ ذَاتِ مَحَاسِنٍتَسْبِي اللَّبِيبَ حَمِيدَةِ الآثَارِ

Miskiyyati al-ʾaʿrāfi dhāti maḥāsinin, Tasbī al-labība ḥamīdati al-ʾāthāri

Musk-scented, endowed with beauties that captivate the wise, of praiseworthy traces.

قَدْ كَانَ أُنْسِي فِي الوُجُودِ وُجُودَهَابِشَمَائِلٍ مِثْلِ النَّسِيمِ السَّارِي

Qad kāna unsī fī al-wujūdi wujūdahā, Bishamāʾilin mithli an-nasīmi as-sārī

My intimacy in existence was its presence, with qualities like the breeze that travels by night.

أَلِفَ الرُّبُوعَ وَصَارَ فِيهَا آنِساًلَا تَعْتَرِيهِ خَوَاطِرُ الأَسْفَارِ

Alifa ar-rubūʿa waṣāra fīhā ʾānisan, Lā taʿtarīhi khawāṭiru al-ʾasfāri

It grew used to the dwellings and was at home there, untouched by thoughts of travelling,

حَتَّى أَتَاهُ مِنَ المُقَدَّرِ مُزْعِجٌوَالكَوْنُ دَوَّارٌ مَعَ الأَقْدَارِ

Ḥattā atāhu mina al-muqaddari muzʿijun, Wa-al-kawnu dawwārun maʿa al-ʾaqdāri

Until something unsettling came to it from destiny, for creation turns with the decrees.

فَمَضَى عَلَى وَجْهِ السَّبِيلِ مُيَمِّماًلِمَهَابِطِ الأَنْوَارِ مِنْ بَشَّارِ

Famaḍā ʿalā wajhi as-sabīli muyammiman, Limahābiṭi al-ʾanwāri min bashshāri

So it went on its way, heading for the places where lights descend at Bashshar,

وَبَقِيتُ مُضْطَرِبَ الجَوَانِحِ بَعْدَهُمُتَشَوِّشَ الإِعْلَانِ وَالإِسْرَارِ

Wabaqītu muḍṭariba al-jawāniḥi baʿdahu, Mutashawwisha al-ʾiʿlāni wa-al-ʾisrāri

And I remained, my heart in turmoil after it, troubled outwardly and inwardly.

يَا ظَبْيَ عَيْدِيدِ المُبَارَكِ عَوْدَةًيَحْيَا بِهَا دَنِفٌ أَخُو تَذْكَارِ

Yā ẓabya ʿaydīdi al-mubāraki ʿawdatan, Yaḥyā bihā danifun akhū tadhkāri

O gazelle of blessed 'Idid, a return, by which a lovesick one, given to remembrance, may live,

تَجْرِي مَدَامِعُهُ إِذَا جَنَّ الدُّجَىوَيَحِنُّ بِالآصَالِ وَالإِبْكَارِ

Tajrī madāmiʿuhu idhā janna ad-dujā, Wayaḥinnu bi-al-ʾāṣāli wa-al-ʾibkāri

Whose tears flow when darkness falls, and who yearns in the evenings and the mornings,

أَسَفاً عَلَيْكَ وَحَسْرَةً وَتَوَجُّعاًوَالأَمْرُ لِلَّهِ العَزِيزِ البَارِي

Asafan ʿalayka waḥasratan watawajjuʿan, Wa-al-ʾamru lillāhi al-ʿazīzi al-bārī

In sorrow for you, regret and pain; and the command belongs to Allah, the Mighty, the Creator.

يَا قَلْبُ لَا تَجْزَعْ وَكُنْ مُتَصَبِّراًمُتَوَقِّراً فِي كُلِّ خَطْبٍ طَارِي

Yā qalbu lā tajzaʿ wakun mutaṣabbiran, Mutawaqqiran fī kulli khaṭbin ṭārī

O heart, do not grieve; be patient, dignified in every sudden calamity,

مُتَنَظِّراً مُتَوَقِّعاً مُتَرَجِّياًمُتَرَقِّباً لِلَطَائِفِ الجَبَّارِ

Mutanaẓẓiran mutawaqqiʿan mutarajjiyan, Mutaraqqiban lilaṭāʾifi al-jabbāri

Watching, expecting, hoping, awaiting the kindnesses of the Compeller,

الوَاحِدِ المَلِكِ الرَّفِيعِ جَلَالُهُمُتَوَاصِلِ الإِحْسَانِ وَالإِبْرَارِ

Al-wāḥidi al-maliki ar-rafīʿi jalāluhu, Mutawāṣili al-ʾiḥsāni wa-al-ʾibrāri

The One, the King, exalted in majesty, unceasing in kindness and goodness,

رَبٌّ عَظِيمٌ مُخْلِفٌ وَمُعَوِّضٌمَا فَاتَ بِالأَضْعَافِ وَالإِكْثَارِ

Rabbun ʿaẓīmun mukhlifun wamuʿawwiḍun, Mā fāta bi-al-ʾaḍʿāfi wa-al-ʾikthāri

A mighty Lord who replaces and compensates what is lost, many times over and in abundance.

وَإِذَا الحَوَادِثُ أَظْلَمَتْ وَتَنَكَّرَتْفَافْزَعْ إِلَى جَاهِ النَّبِيِّ المُخْتَارِ

Waʾidhā al-ḥawādithu aẓlamat watanakkarat, Fafzaʿ ilā jāhi an-nabiyyi al-mukhtāri

And when misfortunes grow dark and hostile, turn to the rank of the Chosen Prophet,

المُصْطَفَى الهَادِي الأَنَامَ إِلَى الهُدَىزَيْنِ الوُجُودِ وَخِيرَةِ الأَخْيَارِ

Al-muṣṭafā al-hādī al-ʾanāma ilā al-hudā, Zayni al-wujūdi wakhīrati al-ʾakhyāri

The Chosen One, who guides mankind to guidance, adornment of existence, best of the best,

المُجْتَبَى المُنْتَقَى مِنْ هَاشِمٍبَحْرِ النَّدَى وَالفَضْلِ وَالإِيثَارِ

Al-mujtabā al-muntaqā min hāshimin, Baḥri an-nadā wa-al-faḍli wa-al-ʾīthāri

The elect, the select of Hashim, ocean of generosity, virtue and self-sacrifice,

وَمُحَمَّدٍ المَحْمُودِ ذِي الجَاهِ الَّذِيوَسِعَ البَرَايَا سَيِّدِ الأَبْرَارِ

Wamuḥammadin al-maḥmūdi dhī al-jāhi al-ladhī, Wasiʿa al-barāyā sayyidi al-ʾabrāri

Muhammad, the praised, of the rank that embraces all creation, master of the righteous,

خَيْرِ الوَرَى وَمَلَاذِ كُلِّ مُؤَمِّلٍوَمُدَمِّرِ الطَّاغِينَ وَالكُفَّارِ

Khayri al-warā wamalādhi kulli muʾammilin, Wamudammiri aṭ-ṭāghīna wa-al-kuffāri

The best of mankind and refuge of all who hope, destroyer of tyrants and unbelievers,

وَمُقَدَّمِ الرُّسُلِ الكِرَامِ إِمَامِهِمْوَخِتَامِهِمْ مِنْ غَيْرِ مَا إِنْكَارِ

Wamuqaddami ar-rusuli al-kirāmi imāmihim, Wakhitāmihim min ghayri mā inkāri

Foremost of the noble messengers, their imam and their seal, beyond denial.

قَدْ خَصَّهُ الرَّبُّ الكَرِيمُ بِقُرْبِهِوَرِضَاهُ وَالغُفْرَانِ وَالأَسْرَارِ

Qad khaṣṣahu ar-rabbu al-karīmu biqurbihi, Wariḍāhu wa-al-ghufrāni wa-al-ʾasrāri

The Generous Lord singled him out for His nearness, His good pleasure, forgiveness and secrets,

وَبِلَيْلَةِ المِعْرَاجِ لَمَّا أَنْ رَقَىأَعْلَى الذُّرَى فِي حَضْرَةِ القَهَّارِ

Wabilaylati al-miʿrāji lammā an raqā, Aʿlā adh-dhurā fī ḥaḍrati al-qahhāri

And for the Night of Ascension, when he rose to the highest summit in the presence of the Subduer,

وَمَرَاتِبٍ وَمَنَاقِبٍ وَفَضَائِلٍوَوَسَائِلٍ مَرْفُوعَةِ المِقْدَارِ

Wamarātibin wamanāqibin wafaḍāʾilin, Wawasāʾilin marfūʿati al-miqdāri

And for ranks, virtues and merits, and means of approach of exalted worth.

يَا سَيِّدِي يَا سَنَدِي يَا عُمْدَتِييَا عُدَّتِي فِي عُسْرَتِي وَيَسَارِي

Yā sayyidī yā sanadī yā ʿumdatī, Yā ʿuddatī fī ʿusratī wayasārī

O my master, my support, my mainstay, my provision in my hardship and my ease,

يَا مَفْزَعِي عِنْدَ الكُرُوبِ وَمَلْجَئِيعِنْدَ الخُطُوبِ وَخَشْيَةِ الإِضْرَارِ

Yā mafzaʿī ʿinda al-kurūbi wamaljaʾī, ʿinda al-khuṭūbi wakhashyati al-ʾiḍrāri

My shelter in distress and my refuge in calamities and in fear of harm,

يَا عِصْمَتِي يَا نُصْرَتِي يَا قُوَّتِييَا مُنْجِدِي يَا مُنْقِذِي يَا جَارِي

Yā ʿiṣmatī yā nuṣratī yā quwwatī, Yā munjidī yā munqidhī yā jārī

My protection, my help, my strength, my rescuer, my saviour, my protector,

يَا سَيِّدَ الشُّفَعَاءِ أَدْرِكْنِي فَقَدْأَصْبَحْتُ فِي بَحْرِ الأَسَى مُتَوَارِي

Yā sayyida ash-shufaʿāʾi adriknī faqad, Aṣbaḥtu fī baḥri al-ʾasā mutawārī

O master of intercessors, come to my aid, for I am lost from sight in an ocean of sorrow,

وَعَلَيَّ مِنْ لَيْلِ الغُمُومِ دُجُنَّةٌأَمْسَيْتُ فِيهَا حَائِرَ الأَفْكَارِ

Waʿalayya min layli al-ghumūmi dujunnatun, Amsaytu fīhā ḥāʾira al-ʾafkāri

And upon me lies the darkness of a night of griefs in which I am bewildered in my thoughts,

وَبِقَلْبِيَ الوَجْدُ الَّذِي مَا زَالَ فِيسَوْدَائِهِ مُتَأَجِّجاً كَالنَّارِ

Wabiqalbiya al-wajdu al-ladhī mā zāla fī, Sawdāʾihi mutaʾajjijan ka-an-nāri

And in my heart is a passion that never ceases to blaze like fire in its very core,

مِنْ فُرْقَةِ الأَحْبَابِ وَالأُلَّافِ لِيمَعْ قِلَّةِ الأَعْوَانِ وَالأَنْصَارِ

Min furqati al-ʾaḥbābi wa-al-ʾullāfi lī, Maʿ qillati al-ʾaʿwāni wa-al-ʾanṣāri

From parting with my beloveds and intimates, with few helpers and supporters.

قُمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بِي وَتَوَلَّنِيوَاشْفَعْ إِلَى الرَّحْمَنِ فِي أَوْزَارِي

Qum yā rasūla Allāhi bī watawallanī, Washfaʿ ilā ar-raḥmani fī awzārī

Rise for me, Messenger of Allah, and take charge of me, and intercede with the Most Merciful for my sins.

وَاسْأَلْهُ كَشْفَ مُهِمَّتِي وَمُلِمَّتِيوَقَضَاءَ حَاجَاتِي وَسَتْرَ عَوَارِي

Wasʾalhu kashfa muhimmatī wamulimmatī, Waqaḍāʾa ḥājātī wasatra ʿawārī

Ask Him to lift my concern and my calamity, fulfil my needs and cover my faults,

وَصَلَاحَ حَالَاتِي وَحُسْنَ عَوَاقِبِيوَسَدَادَ خَاتِمَتِي وَحُسْنَ جِوَارِي

Waṣalāḥa ḥālātī waḥusna ʿawāqibī, Wasadāda khātimatī waḥusna jiwārī

Set my states right, make my outcomes good, make my end sound and my resting place good,

وَدَوَامَ عَافِيَةٍ وَعَفْوٍ شَامِلٍوَكَمَالَ تَوْفِيقٍ وَلُطْفٍ جَارِي

Wadawāma ʿāfiyatin waʿafwin shāmilin, Wakamāla tawfīqin waluṭfin jārī

And grant lasting well-being, all-embracing pardon, perfect success and flowing gentleness.

وَعَلَيْكَ صَلَّى اللهُ يَا عَلَمَ الهُدَىمَا هَبَّتِ النَّسَمَاتُ بِالأَسْحَارِ

Waʿalayka ṣallā Allāhu yā ʿalama al-hudā, Mā habbati an-nasamātu bi-al-ʾasḥāri

Upon you be Allah's blessings, O banner of guidance, as long as the breezes blow before dawn,

وَالآلِ وَالصَّحْبِ الكِرَامِ وَتَابِعٍمَا غَنَّتِ الأَطْيَارُ فِي الأَشْجَارِ

Wa-al-ʾāli wa-aṣ-ṣaḥbi al-kirāmi watābiʿin, Mā ghannati al-ʾaṭyāru fī al-ʾashjāri

And upon your family, your noble Companions and every follower, as long as the birds sing in the trees.
