Laysa Hadha Bi'ajib

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Laysa hadhā biʿajībi, Minka yā ẓabya al-kathībi

This is no surprise from you, O gazelle of the sand dune,

Yā shabīhan biqaḍībi, Hazzahu rīḥu al-janūbi

O you who are like a slender branch swayed by the south wind.

Tatanaḥḥā ʿan janābī, Wahwa maʾwan lilgharībi

You turn away from my side, though it is a shelter for the stranger,

Watuṣāfī man jafānī, Min baʿīdin waqarībi

And you are friendly with those who shun me, whether far or near.

How wretched is this deed! So turn from it to beautiful deeds.

Wattaqi ar-raḥmana waʿqil, Waʿdu ʿan qālin waqīli

Fear the Most Merciful and be wise, and turn away from idle talk and gossip.

Watajannab kulla mubṭil, Waghabiyyin wajahūli

Avoid every purveyor of falsehood, every fool and every ignorant one,

Wattabiʿ kulla ʿalīmin, Waḥalīmin wamuṣībi

And follow everyone who is learned, forbearing and sound in judgment.

Yā raʿā Allāhu zamānan, Marra bī fī shiʿbi ʿāmir

May Allah protect a time that I passed in the ravine of 'Amir,

Wasaqā Allāhu layālin, Bayna hātīka al-mashāʿir

And may Allah send rain upon nights spent among those sacred places,

Wa-al-maʿāhid wa-al-mashāhid, Wa-al-maʿābid wa-al-maʾāthir

The familiar haunts and the shrines, the places of worship and the noble traces.

Hal tarā ʿayshan taqaḍḍā, ʿāʾidan lī ʿan qarībi

Do you think a life that has passed will return to me soon?

Ayyuhā al-ghimru al-mughaffal, Lā takun tatbaʿ hawākā

O heedless, careless one, do not follow your desires.

Watruki ad-dunyā al-ḥaqīrah, Waṭṭariḥhā min warākā

Leave this contemptible world, and cast it behind you.

Waṭlubi al-ʾukhrā al-khaṭīrah, Wattabiʿ man qad daʿākā

Seek the momentous Hereafter, and follow the one who called you,

Khātama ar-rusli al-kirāmi, Niʿma min khillin ḥabībi

The Seal of the noble Messengers: what an excellent friend and beloved!

Ṣalawātu Allāhi sarmad, Bi-al-ghadāyā wa-al-ʿashiyyāt

May the blessings of Allah forever, in the mornings and the evenings,

Tablughu al-hādī muḥammad, Al-mushaffaʿa fī al-bariyyāt

Reach the guide Muhammad, whose intercession for creation is granted,

Wa-al-khalāʾiq wa-al-ʾaʾimmah, Baʿdahu min khayri sādāt

And his successors and the imams after him, the best of masters,

Min dhawī al-qurbā waṣaḥbi, Kulli awwāhin munībi

Of his near kin and Companions, each one tender-hearted and ever turning to Allah.
