إِذَا شِئْتَ أَنْ تَحْيَا سَعِيداً مَدَى العُمْرِ

إِذَا شِئْتَ أَنْ تَحْيَا سَعِيداً مَدَى العُمْرِوَتُجْعَلَ بَعْدَ المَوْتِ فِي رَوْضَةِ القَبْرِ

Idhā shiʾta an taḥyā saʿīdan madā al-ʿumri, Watujʿala baʿda al-mawti fī rawḍati al-qabri

If you wish to live happily all your life, and after death be placed in a garden in the grave,

وَتُبْعَثَ عِنْدَ النَّفْخِ فِي الصُّورِ آمِناًمِنَ الخَوْفِ وَالتَّهْدِيدِ وَالطَّرْدِ وَالخُسْرِ

Watubʿatha ʿinda an-nafkhi fī aṣ-ṣūri ʾāminan, Mina al-khawfi wa-at-tahdīdi wa-aṭ-ṭardi wa-al-khusri

And be raised, when the Trumpet is blown, safe from fear and threat, from rejection and loss,

وَتُعْرَضَ مَرْفُوعاً كَرِيماً مُبَجَّلاًتُبَشِّرُكَ الأَمْلَاكُ بِالفَوْزِ وَالأَجْرِ

Watuʿraḍa marfūʿan karīman mubajjalan, Tubashshiruka al-ʾamlāku bi-al-fawzi wa-al-ʾajri

And be presented exalted, honoured and revered, with the angels giving you glad tidings of triumph and reward,

وَتَرْجَحَ عِنْدَ الوَزْنِ أَعْمَالُكَ الَّتِيتُسَرُّ بِهَا فِي مَوْقِفِ الحَشْرِ وَالنَّشْرِ

Watarjaḥa ʿinda al-wazni aʿmāluka al-latī, Tusarru bihā fī mawqifi al-ḥashri wa-an-nashri

And have your deeds weigh heavy in the Balance, deeds that will gladden you at the Gathering and the Resurrection,

وَتَمْضِي عَلَى مَتْنِ الصِّرَاطِ كَبَارِقٍوَتَشْرَبَ مِنْ حَوْضِ النَّبِيِّ المُصْطَفَى الطُّهْرِ

Watamḍī ʿalā matni aṣ-ṣirāṭi kabāriqin, Watashraba min ḥawḍi an-nabiyyi al-muṣṭafā aṭ-ṭuhri

And pass over the bridge like lightning, and drink from the Basin of the pure, chosen Prophet,

وَتَخْلُدَ فِي أَعْلَى الجِنَانِ مُنَعَّماًحَظِيّاً بِقُرْبِ الوَاحِدِ الأَحَدِ الوِتْرِ

Watakhluda fī aʿlā al-jināni munaʿʿaman, Ḥaẓiyyan biqurbi al-wāḥidi al-ʾaḥadi al-witri

And abide forever in the highest Gardens in bliss, favoured with nearness to the One, the Unique, the Single,

وَتَنْظُرَهُ بِالعَيْنِ وَهْوَ مُقَدَّسٌعَنِ الأَيْنِ وَالتَّكْيِيفِ وَالحَدِّ وَالحَصْرِ

Watanẓurahu bi-al-ʿayni wahwa muqaddasun, ʿani al-ʾayni wa-at-takyīfi wa-al-ḥaddi wa-al-ḥaṣri

And see Him with your eyes, while He is holy beyond place and modality, beyond limit and confinement,

عَلَيْكَ بِتَحْسِينِ اليَقِينِ فَإِنَّهُإِذَا تَمَّ صَارَ الغَيْبُ عَيْناً بِلَا نُكْرِ

ʿalayka bitaḥsīni al-yaqīni faʾinnahu, Idhā tamma ṣāra al-ghaybu ʿaynan bilā nukri

Then you must perfect your certainty, for when it is complete, the unseen becomes plainly seen.

وَكُنْ أَشْعَرِيّاً فِي اعْتِقَادِكَ إِنَّهُهُوَ المَنْهَلُ الصَّافِي عَنِ الزَّيْغِ وَالكُفْرِ

Wakun ashʿariyyan fī ʿtiqādika innahu, Huwa al-manhalu aṣ-ṣāfī ʿani az-zayghi wa-al-kufri

Be an Ash'ari in your creed, for it is the pure spring, free of deviation and disbelief.

وَقَدْ حَرَّرَ القُطْبُ الإِمَامُ مَلَاذُنَاعَقِيدَتَهُ فَهْيَ الشِّفَاءُ مِنَ الضُّرِّ

Waqad ḥarrara al-quṭbu al-ʾimāmu malādhunā, ʿaqīdatahu fahya ash-shifāʾu mina aḍ-ḍurri

The Pole and Imam, our refuge, has set out his creed precisely, and it is a healing from harm.

وَأَعْنِي بِهِ مَنْ لَيْسَ يُنْعَتُ غَيْرُهُبِحُجَّةِ إِسْلَامٍ فَيَا لَكَ مِنْ فَخْرِ

Waʾaʿnī bihi man laysa yunʿatu ghayruhu, Biḥujjati islāmin fayā laka min fakhri

I mean the one whom none but he is called "The Proof of Islam": what an honour!

وَخُذْ مِنْ عُلُومِ الدِّينِ حَظّاً مُوَفَّراًفَبِالعِلْمِ تَسْمُو فِي الحَيَاةِ وَفِي الحَشْرِ

Wakhudh min ʿulūmi ad-dīni ḥaẓẓan muwaffaran, Fabi-al-ʿilmi tasmū fī al-ḥayāti wafī al-ḥashri

Take a generous share of the sciences of religion, for by knowledge you rise in life and at the Gathering.

وَوَاظِبْ عَلَى دَرْسِ القُرَانِ فَإِنَّ فِيتِلَاوَتِهِ الإِكْسِيرَ وَالشَّرْحَ لِلصَّدْرِ

Wawāẓib ʿalā darsi al-qurāni faʾinna fī, Tilāwatihi al-ʾiksīra wa-ash-sharḥa lilṣṣadri

Persist in studying the Qur'an, for in its recitation is the elixir and the opening of the breast.

أَلَا إِنَّهُ البَحْرُ المُحِيطُ وَغَيْرُهُمِنَ الكُتْبِ أَنْهَارٌ تُمَدُّ مِنَ البَحْرِ

Alā innahu al-baḥru al-muḥīṭu waghayruhu, Mina al-kutbi anhārun tumaddu mina al-baḥri

It is the all-encompassing ocean, and other books are rivers fed from that ocean.

تَدَبَّرْ مَعَانِيهِ وَرَتِّلْهُ خَاشِعاًتَفُوزُ مِنَ الأَسْرَارِ بِالكَنْزِ وَالذُّخْرِ

Tadabbar maʿānīhi warattilhu khāshiʿan, Tafūzu mina al-ʾasrāri bi-al-kanzi wa-adh-dhukhri

Ponder its meanings and recite it with humility, and you will win the treasure and hoard of its secrets.

وَكُنْ رَاهِباً عِنْدَ الوَعِيدِ وَرَاغِباًإِذَا مَا تَلَوْتَ الوَعْدَ فِي غَايَةِ البِشْرِ

Wakun rāhiban ʿinda al-waʿīdi warāghiban, Idhā mā talawta al-waʿda fī ghāyati al-bishri

Be fearful at its threats and full of longing when you recite its promise, in the utmost joy,

بَعِيداً عَنِ المَنْهِيِّ مُجْتَنِباً لَهُحَرِيصاً عَلَى المَأْمُورِ فِي العُسْرِ وَاليُسْرِ

Baʿīdan ʿani al-manhiyyi mujtaniban lahu, Ḥarīṣan ʿalā al-maʾmūri fī al-ʿusri wa-al-yusri

Far from what is forbidden, avoiding it, eager for what is commanded, in hardship and in ease.

وَإِنْ رُمْتَ أَنْ تَحْظَى بِقَلْبٍ مُنَوَّرٍنَقِيٍّ عَنِ الأَكْدَارِ فَاعْكُفْ عَلَى الذِّكْرِ

Waʾin rumta an taḥẓā biqalbin munawwarin, Naqiyyin ʿani al-ʾakdāri faʿkuf ʿalā adh-dhikri

If you wish to be granted an illuminated heart, pure of all impurities, devote yourself to remembrance.

وَثَابِرْ عَلَيْهِ فِي الظَّلَامِ وَفِي الضِّيَاوَفِي كُلِّ حَالٍ بِاللِّسَانِ وَبِالسِّرِّ

Wathābir ʿalayhi fī aẓ-ẓalāmi wafī aḍ-ḍiyā, Wafī kulli ḥālin bi-al-lisāni wabi-as-sirri

Persevere in it in darkness and in light, in every state, with the tongue and in secret.

فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ لَازَمْتَهُ بِتَوَجُّهٍبَدَا لَكَ نُورٌ لَيْسَ كَالشَّمْسِ وَالبَدْرِ

Faʾinnaka in lāzamtahu bitawajjuhin, Badā laka nūrun laysa ka-ash-shamsi wa-al-badri

For if you keep to it, turning wholly to Him, a light will appear to you unlike the sun and the moon,

وَلَكِنَّهُ نُورٌ مِنَ اللهِ وَارِدٌأَتَى ذِكْرُهُ فِي سُورَةِ النُّورِ فَاسْتَقْرِ

Walakinnahu nūrun mina Allāhi wāridun, Atā dhikruhu fī sūrati an-nūri fastaqri

A light arriving from Allah, mentioned in Surat al-Nur; so read it.

وَصَفِّ مِنَ الأَكْدَارِ سِرَّكَ إِنَّهُإِذَا مَا صَفَا أَوْلَاكَ مَعْنىً مِنَ الفِكْرِ

Waṣaffi mina al-ʾakdāri sirraka innahu, Idhā mā ṣafā awlāka maʿnan mina al-fikri

Purify your inmost self of impurities, for when it is pure, it will grant you a meaning in reflection

تَطُوفُ بِهِ غَيْبَ العَوَالِمِ كُلِّهَاوَتَسْرِي بِهِ فِي ظُلْمَةِ اللَّيْلِ إِذْ يَسْرِي

Taṭūfu bihi ghayba al-ʿawālimi kullihā, Watasrī bihi fī ẓulmati al-layli idh yasrī

By which you will roam the unseen of all the worlds, and journey through the darkness of night as it journeys.

وَبِالجِدِّ وَالصَّبْرِ الجَمِيلِ تَحُلُّ فِيفَسِيحِ العُلَا فَاسْتَوْصِ بِالجِدِّ وَالصَّبْرِ

Wabi-al-jiddi wa-aṣ-ṣabri al-jamīli taḥullu fī, Fasīḥi al-ʿulā fastawṣi bi-al-jiddi wa-aṣ-ṣabri

With earnestness and beautiful patience you will alight in the vastness of the heights; so hold fast to earnestness and patience.

وَكُنْ شَاكِراً لِلَّهِ قَلْباً وَقَالَباًعَلَى فَضْلِهِ إِنَّ المَزِيدَ مَعَ الشُّكْرِ

Wakun shākiran lillāhi qalban waqālaban, ʿalā faḍlihi inna al-mazīda maʿa ash-shukri

Be grateful to Allah in heart and in body for His bounty, for increase comes with gratitude.

تَوَكَّلْ عَلَى مَوْلَاكَ وَارْضَ بِحُكْمِهِوَكُنْ مُخْلِصاً لِلَّهِ فِي السِّرِّ وَالجَهْرِ

Tawakkal ʿalā mawlāka warḍa biḥukmihi, Wakun mukhliṣan lillāhi fī as-sirri wa-al-jahri

Trust in your Master and be content with His judgment, and be sincere to Allah in secret and in public,

قَنُوعاً بِمَا أَعْطَاكَ مُسْتَغْنِياً بِهِلَهُ حَامِداً فِي حَالَيِ اليُسْرِ وَالعُسْرِ

Qanūʿan bimā aʿṭāka mustaghniyan bihi, Lahu ḥāmidan fī ḥālayi al-yusri wa-al-ʿusri

Content with what He has given you, finding sufficiency in it, praising Him in both ease and hardship.

وَكُنْ بَاذِلاً لِلْفَضْلِ سَمْحاً وَلَا تَخَفْمِنَ اللهِ إِقْتَاراً وَلَا تَخْشَ مِنْ فَقْرِ

Wakun bādhilan lilfaḍli samḥan walā takhaf, Mina Allāhi iqtāran walā takhsha min faqri

Be generous with what you have, open-handed, and do not fear want from Allah, nor be afraid of poverty.

وَإِيَّاكَ وَالدُّنْيَا فَإِنَّ حَلَالَهَاحِسَابٌ وَفِي مَحْظُورِهَا الهَتْكُ لِلسِّتْرِ

Waʾiyyāka wa-ad-dunyā faʾinna ḥalālahā, Ḥisābun wafī maḥẓūrihā al-hatku lilssitri

Beware of the world, for its lawful things bring reckoning, and its forbidden things tear away the veil.

وَلَا تَكُ عَيَّاباً وَلَا تَكُ حَاسِداًوَلَا تَكُ ذَا غِشٍّ وَلَا تَكُ ذَا غَدْرِ

Walā taku ʿayyāban walā taku ḥāsidan, Walā taku dhā ghishshin walā taku dhā ghadri

Do not be a faultfinder, do not be envious, do not be deceitful, and do not be treacherous.

وَلَا تَطْلُبَنَّ الجَاهَ يَا صَاحِ إِنَّهُشَهِيٌّ وَفِيهِ السُّمُّ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا تَدْرِي

Walā taṭlubanna al-jāha yā ṣāḥi innahu, Shahiyyun wafīhi as-summu min ḥaythu lā tadrī

Never seek status, my friend, for it is tempting, yet poison lies in it where you do not know.

وَإِيَّاكَ وَالأَطْمَاعَ إِنَّ قَرِينَهَاذَلِيلٌ خَسِيسُ القَصْدِ مُتَّضِعُ القَدْرِ

Waʾiyyāka wa-al-ʾaṭmāʿa inna qarīnahā, Dhalīlun khasīsu al-qaṣdi muttaḍiʿu al-qadri

Beware of greed, for its companion is abject, base in aim and low in worth.

وَإِنْ رُمْتَ أَمْراً فَاسْأَلِ اللهَ إِنَّهُهُوَ المُفْضِلُ الوَهَّابُ لِلْخَيْرِ وَالوَفْرِ

Waʾin rumta amran fasʾali Allāha innahu, Huwa al-mufḍilu al-wahhābu lilkhayri wa-al-wafri

If you want something, ask Allah, for He is the Bountiful, the Giver of good and plenty.

وَأُوصِيكَ بِالخَمْسِ الَّتِي هُنَّ يَا أَخِيعِمَادٌ لِدِينِ اللهِ وَاسِطَةُ الأَمْرِ

Waʾūṣīka bi-al-khamsi al-latī hunna yā akhī, ʿimādun lidīni Allāhi wāsiṭatu al-ʾamri

I counsel you to keep the five prayers, which, my brother, are the pillar of Allah's religion and the heart of the matter.

وَحَافِظْ عَلَيْهَا فِي الجَمَاعَةِ دَائِماًوَوَاظِبْ عَلَيْهَا فِي العِشَاءِ وَفِي الفَجْرِ

Waḥāfiẓ ʿalayhā fī al-jamāʿati dāʾiman, Wawāẓib ʿalayhā fī al-ʿishāʾi wafī al-fajri

Keep them always in congregation, and persist in them at 'Isha' and at Fajr.

وَقُمْ فِي ظَلَامِ اللَّيْلِ لِلَّهِ قَانِتاًوَصَلِّ لَهُ وَاخْتِمْ صَلَاتَكَ بِالوِتْرِ

Waqum fī ẓalāmi al-layli lillāhi qānitan, Waṣalli lahu wakhtim ṣalātaka bi-al-witri

Rise in the darkness of night, devoutly obedient to Allah, pray to Him, and close your prayer with the Witr.

وَكُنْ تَائِباً مِنْ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ أَتَيْتَهُوَمُسْتَغْفِراً فِي كُلِّ حِينٍ مِنَ الوِزْرِ

Wakun tāʾiban min kulli dhanbin ataytahu, Wamustaghfiran fī kulli ḥīnin mina al-wizri

Repent of every sin you have committed, and seek forgiveness at every moment for your burden.

عَسَى المُفْضِلُ المَوْلَى الكَرِيمُ بِمَنِّهِيَجُودُ عَلَى ذَنْبِ المُسِيئِينَ بِالغَفْرِ

ʿasā al-mufḍilu al-mawlā al-karīmu bimannihi, Yajūdu ʿalā dhanbi al-musīʾīna bi-al-ghafri

Perhaps the Bountiful, the Generous Master, by His grace, will grant forgiveness to the sins of wrongdoers.

فَإِحْسَانُهُ عَمَّ الأَنَامَ وَجُودُهُعَلَى كُلِّ مَوْجُودٍ وَإِفْضَالُهُ يَجْرِي

Faʾiḥsānuhu ʿamma al-ʾanāma wajūduhu, ʿalā kulli mawjūdin waʾifḍāluhu yajrī

For His kindness embraces all creation, His generosity reaches every existing thing, and His bounty flows.

وَصَلِّ عَلَى خَيْرِ البَرِيَّةِ كُلِّهَامُحَمَّدٍ المَبْعُوثِ بِالعُذْرِ وَالنُّذْرِ

Waṣalli ʿalā khayri al-bariyyati kullihā, Muḥammadin al-mabʿūthi bi-al-ʿudhri wa-an-nudhri

And send blessings upon the best of all creation, Muhammad, sent to excuse and to warn,

نَبِيِّ الهُدَى مَنْ عَظَّمَ اللهُ شَأْنَهُوَأَيَّدَهُ بِالفَتْحِ مِنْهُ وَبِالنَّصْرِ

Nabiyyi al-hudā man ʿaẓẓama Allāhu shaʾnahu, Waʾayyadahu bi-al-fatḥi minhu wabi-an-naṣri

Prophet of guidance, whose station Allah exalted, and whom He supported with His opening and victory.

عَلَيْهِ صَلَاةُ اللهِ ثُمَّ سَلَامُهُصَلَاةً وَتَسْلِيماً إِلَى آخِرِ الدَّهْرِ

ʿalayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu, Ṣalātan wataslīman ilā ʾākhiri ad-dahri

Upon him be the blessings of Allah and His peace, blessings and peace until the end of time,

مَعَ الآلِ وَالأَصْحَابِ مَا هَبَّتِ الصَّبَاوَمَا زَمْزَمَ الحَادِي وَمَا غَرَّدَ القُمْرِي

Maʿa al-ʾāli wa-al-ʾaṣḥābi mā habbati aṣ-ṣabā, Wamā zamzama al-ḥādī wamā gharrada al-qumrī

With his family and Companions, as long as the east wind blows, the camel-driver chants, and the turtle-dove sings.
