Hawwin Alayka Nawa'iba ad-Dahr

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Hawwin ʿalayka nawāʾiba ad-dahri, Yahun ʿalayka kullu mā yajrī

Make light of the misfortunes of time, and all that happens will seem light to you.

Wakun liluṭfi Allāhi mustanẓiran, Min ḥaythu lā tadrīhi aw tadrī

Await the gentleness of Allah from where you know not, or where you know.

Fakam lahu min farajin ʿājilin, Yakshifu lilbaʾsāʾi wa-aḍ-ḍurri

How much swift relief He has that lifts hardship and harm!

Faḥassini aẓ-ẓanna bimawlāka fī al-, Aḥwāli min yusrin wamin ʿusri

So think well of your Master in all states, in ease and in hardship.

Warawwiḥi al-qalba birawḥi ar-riḍā, Taʿīshu fī unsin wafī bishri

Refresh your heart with the breath of contentment, and you will live in intimacy and joy.

Wakun mina ash-shukri ʿalā ghāyatin, Inna an-naʿīma aṣ-ṣirfa fī ash-shukri

Be utmost in gratitude, for pure bliss lies in gratitude.

Naʿam waʿawwil fī jamīʿi al-ʾumūr, Mā dumta fī ad-dunyā ʿalā aṣ-ṣabri

Yes, and in all matters rely, as long as you are in this world, on patience,

Faʾinnahā dāru al-miḥan wa-al-ʾasā, Min ghayri mā shakkin walā nukri

For it is the abode of trials and sorrow, without doubt or denial.

Ṭūbā liman jānabahā wattaṣaf, Bi-az-zuhdi fīhā muddata al-ʿumri

Blessed is whoever avoids it and is marked by renunciation of it all his life.

Yā rabbi waffiqnā wasaddid wakun, ʿawnan lanā fī as-sirri wa-al-jahri

O Lord, grant us success and right guidance, and be our help in secret and in public,

Waghfir lanā wa-aṭ-ṭuf binā dāʾiman, Wakhtim lanā bi-al-khayri wa-al-birri

Forgive us, be gentle with us always, and seal our lives with goodness and righteousness.
