Ash-Shakku wa-l-Wahmu Ra'su ash-Sharri wa-l-Hadhar
Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad
Wasʾal mina Allāhi kashfa al-buʾsi wa-aḍ-ḍarari
And ask Allah to remove misery and harm.
Ash-shakku wa-al-wahmu raʾsu ash-sharri wa-al-ḥadhari, Wa-al-jiddu wa-aṣ-ṣabru bābu al-fawzi wa-aẓ-ẓafari
Doubt and illusion are the root of evil and of fear, and earnestness and patience are the gate of triumph and victory.
Wa-al-ʿazmu wa-al-ḥazmu lā yunjī mina al-qadari, Sallim hudīta limāḍī al-ḥukmi waṣṭabiri
Resolve and prudence do not save from destiny; submit, may you be guided, to the decree that has passed, and be patient.
Ḥassin ẓunūnaka bi-al-mawlā tarā al-bushrā, Fa-ar-rabbu ʿinda ẓunūni al-ʿabdi faltadrā
Think well of your Master and you will see glad tidings, for the Lord is as His servant thinks of Him; so know it.
Jāʾa al-ḥadīthu bidhā faṣgha ilā adh-dhikrā, Wa-al-bas mina aṣ-ṣabri sirbālan ladā aḍ-ḍajari
The hadith has come with this, so listen to the reminder, and put on a garment of patience in times of distress.
Lā tajzaʿanna walā tayʾas mina al-faraji, Waqul idhā lajja khaṭbu aḍ-ḍurri wa-al-ḥaraji
Do not grieve, and do not despair of relief, and say, when the calamity of harm and hardship persists:
Ishtaddi azmatu in tashtaddi tanfarijī, Fa-al-ʿusru bi-al-yusri matbūʿun ʿalā al-ʾathari
"Grow severe, O hardship; if you grow severe, you will lift," for hardship is followed by ease, close behind.
Rawwiḥ fuʾādaka min hammin wamin ḥazani, Faʾinnahu taʿabun lilrrūḥi wa-al-badani
Give your heart rest from worry and grief, for it is weariness for the spirit and the body.
Warjiʿ ilā Allāhi fī as-sarrāʾi wa-al-miḥani, Rujūʿa muftaqirin muḍṭarrin munkasiri
Return to Allah in prosperity and in trials, the return of one in need, compelled and broken.
Kam shiddatin ḍāqa minhā aṣ-ṣadru wa-an-nādī, Takhawwafa al-qalbu minhā sharrahā al-ʿādī
How many a hardship that made the breast and the company feel constricted, whose hostile evil the heart feared,
Amsat famā aṣbaḥat ḥattā badā bādī, Min luṭfi rabbika lam yubqi walam yadhari
Came in the evening, and before morning there appeared something of your Lord's gentleness that left nothing of it behind!
Walilnnawāʾibi wa-al-ʾakdāri awqātu, Idhā nqaḍat tanqaḍī minhā iqāmātu
Misfortunes and troubles have their times; when those times end, their stay ends with them.
Wafī at-taḥarruki qabla al-waqti ʾāfātu, Faskun lahā wartaqib yā qalbu waṣṭabiri
Moving before the time brings harm; so be still, wait, O heart, and be patient.
Waʾinna qawlaka lim hadhā wakayfa wahal, Minka ʿtirāḍun ʿalā ar-raḥmani ʿazza wajall
Your saying "Why this?" and "How?" and "Is it?" Is an objection on your part to the Most Merciful, Mighty and Majestic.
Qul qaddara Allāhu mā shāʾa al-ʾilahu faʿal, Idhā ghulibta kamā qad ṣaḥḥa fī al-khabari
Say, "Allah decreed, and what God wills He does," when you are overcome, as is authentic in the hadith.
Qul ḥasbiya Allāhu dhū al-ʿarshi al-ladhī yaʿlam, Bi-as-sirri wa-al-jahri wastaslim lahu taslam
Say, "Allah suffices me, Lord of the Throne, who knows the secret and the open," and submit to Him and you will be safe.
Walā taqul law kadhā kāna kadhā tandam, Warḍa bimurri al-qaḍā tanjū mina al-khaṭari
Do not say, "If only this had been so, it would have been thus," for you will regret it; accept the bitterness of decree and you will be saved from danger.
Warubba amrin mahūlin yuḍjiru al-ʾinsān, Fī ṭayyihi mūjibātu al-ʿafwi wa-al-ghufrān
Many a terrifying matter that distresses a person holds within it the causes of pardon and forgiveness,
Wafī ʿawāqibihi al-khayrātu wa-al-ʾiḥsān, Farmi al-ʿawāqiba wadkhul rawḍata al-fikari
And in its outcomes are good things and kindness; so look to the outcomes, and enter the garden of reflection.
Wabashshiri al-qalba bi-al-ʾifrāji wa-al-faraḥi, Wabi-al-ʿawāfī mina al-ʾakdāri wa-at-taraḥi
Give your heart glad tidings of relief and joy, of well-being from troubles and sorrow,
Wabi-al-munā wa-al-hanā wa-al-fawzi bi-al-minaḥi, Min faḍli rabbika washkur muddata al-ʿumuri
Of wishes, happiness and the winning of gifts from your Lord's bounty, and be grateful all your life.
Qul yā samīʿa ad-duʿā yā ʿālima al-ʾasrār, Yā kāshifa aḍ-ḍurri yā ghaffāru yā qahhār
Say: "O Hearer of prayer, O Knower of secrets, O Remover of harm, O Forgiving, O Subduer,
Yā jābira al-kasri yā jabbāru yā sattār, Ilayka fawwaḍtu amrī wantahā naẓarī
O Mender of the broken, O Compeller, O Coverer of faults, to You I have entrusted my affair, and my gaze rests with You.
Yā ʿuddatī yā rajāʾī fī al-muhimmāti, Wamafzaʿī wamalādhī fī al-mulimmāti
O my provision, O my hope in matters of concern, my shelter and my refuge in calamities,
Ḍāqat bimā ḥalla ḥālātī waʾawqātī, Fakshifhu fī ʿajalin yā bāriʾa aṣ-ṣuwari
My states and my times have grown narrow with what has befallen me; so remove it swiftly, O Shaper of forms.
Ilayka wajjahtu wajhī wantahā sayrī, Walam urajjī likashfi al-buʾsi wa-aḍ-ḍayri
To You I have turned my face, and with You my journey ends, and I do not hope for the removal of misery and harm
Siwāka yā rabbu yā fattāḥu bi-al-khayri, Subḥānaka Allāhu yā ruknī wayā wazarī
From any but You, O Lord, O Opener of good; glory be to You, O Allah, my pillar and my shelter.
Yā dhā al-jalāli wadhā al-ʾikrāmi wa-al-ʾiʿẓām, Yā mālika al-mulki yā dhā aṭ-ṭawli wa-al-ʾinʿām
O Possessor of Majesty, Generosity and Grandeur, O Owner of Sovereignty, O Possessor of bounty and blessings,
Yā rabbi yā rabbi thabbitnā ʿalā al-ʾislām, Wa-al-ḥaqqi wa-aṣ-ṣidqi waḥfaẓnā mina al-ghiyari
O Lord, O Lord, make us firm upon Islam, upon truth and sincerity, and protect us from the turns of fortune.
Innī saʾaltuka bi-al-hādī an-nabī aṭ-ṭāhir, Muḥammadi al-muṣṭafā aṣ-ṣābiri ash-shākir
I ask You by the guide, the pure Prophet, Muhammad, the Chosen, the patient, the grateful,
Khayri al-bariyyati min bādin wamin ḥāḍir, An takshifa aḍ-ḍurra wajmaʿnī ʿalā waṭarī
The best of creation, nomad and settled, to remove the harm and grant me my wish."
Yā khātama ar-rusli yā yāsīnu yā ṭaha, Yā khīrata Allāhi fī ad-dunyā waʾukhrāhā
O Seal of the Messengers, O Yasin, O Taha, O chosen of Allah in this world and the next,
Yā akrama al-khalqi yā aʿlā al-warā jāhā, Nādāka dhū kurbatin min lujjati al-kadari
O most generous of creation, O highest of mankind in rank, one in distress calls you from the depths of trouble.
Yā man huwa al-ʿurwatu al-wuthqā limuʿtaṣimi, Waman huwa an-niʿmatu al-ʿuẓmā limughtanimi
O you who are the firmest handhold for one who holds fast, and the greatest blessing for one who seizes it,
Ṣallā wasallama rabbu al-ʿarshi wa-al-ʾumami, ʿalayka daʾban wabi-al-ʾāṣāli wa-al-bukari
May the Lord of the Throne and of the nations bless you and grant you peace constantly, in the evenings and the mornings.
