Antumu li-l-'ayni wa-l-Athar

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Antumu lilʿayni wa-al-ʾathari, Muntahā al-ʾāmāli wa-al-waṭari

You are, for the eye and the trace, the utmost of hopes and desires.

Yā sukūnan fī as-sarāʾiri min, Sirri sirrī lā mina an-naẓari

O tranquillity in the inmost depths, from the secret of my secret, not from sight,

ʿaṭfatan yahdaʾ bihā qaliqun, Ḍāʿa minhu al-ʿumru fī as-safari

A kind glance to calm a restless one whose life has been lost in travelling.

Lam yazal fī lujji fikratihi, Rākiban lilhawli wa-al-khaṭari

He has never ceased, in the depths of his thought, to ride out terror and danger,

Sāʾiḥan fī barri muʿtabirin, Wayḥa maqṣūrin ʿalā al-fikari

Wandering through the land of one who takes lessons; alas for one confined to his thoughts!

Hakadhā fī ṭūli muddatihi, Ṭāʾifan fī al-ḥādithi ad-dathiri

So he has been, all his long life, circling around the passing, perishing world.

Ayna ʿilmu al-kashfi min naẓarin, Ayna raʾyu al-ʿayni min khabari

What is the knowledge of unveiling beside reasoning? What is seeing with the eye beside hearsay?

Ayna ayna al-muhmalāni ʿulan, Wankhifāḍan farmi bi-al-baṣari

Where, where are the two left unmarked, above and below? Cast your gaze and see.

Inna sirra Allāhi mustatirun, Fī jamīʿi al-kawni wa-al-bashari

The secret of Allah is hidden throughout all creation and humanity.

Faqṭaʿi al-ḥujba al-kathīfata bi-as-sa, Yri ʿanhā ghayra muqtaṣiri

So cut through the dense veils by travelling away from them, never stopping short,

Waqṭaʿi al-ḥujba al-laṭīfata bi-as-sa, Yri fīhā ghayra mughtariri

And cut through the subtle veils by travelling within them, never deceived.

Faʾidhā jāwazta murtaqiyan, Sidrata al-ʾasrāri wa-al-qadari

When you have passed beyond, ascending, the lote tree of secrets and destiny,

Fatawaqqaf wantaẓir ʿalaman, Min ʿulūmi al-ʾamri waddakiri

Then stop, and wait for a knowledge from the sciences of the divine command, and remember.

Waḥtafiẓ bi-ash-sharʿi wabghi bihi, Ḥukma rabbi al-ʿarshi fī aṣ-ṣuwari

Hold fast to the Law and seek by it the judgment of the Lord of the Throne in all forms,

Dīna khayri al-khalqi ashrafihim, Sayyidi as-sādāti min muḍari

The religion of the best of creation, the noblest of them, master of masters, of Mudar.

Ṣalawātu Allāhi tablughuhu, Mā taghannā al-wurqu fī ash-shajari

May the blessings of Allah reach him as long as the grey doves sing in the trees.
