Amutu Bida'i wa-d-Dawa Fi Yadaykum
Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad
Amūtu bidāʾī wa-ad-dawā fī yadaykumu, Aḥibbata qalbī anʿimū bidawāʾī
I am dying of my illness while the cure is in your hands; beloveds of my heart, be gracious and grant me my cure.
Idhā kāna dāʾī aṣluhu al-buʿdu ʿankumu, Faʾinna dawāʾī qurbukum washifāʾī
If my illness springs from my distance from you, then my cure and my healing is nearness to you.
Tawālat kurūbī mudh ḍarabtum ḥijābakum, Fahal min sabīlin liy likashfi ghiṭāʾī
My griefs have followed one upon another since you drew your veil; is there any way for my covering to be lifted?
Aṭaltum biʿādī baʿda qurbin aliftuhu, Faʿud yā zamāna al-waṣli qabla fanāʾī
You have prolonged my distance after a nearness I had grown used to; so return, O time of union, before I perish.
Laʾin dāma hadhā al-hajru minkum wafī al-ḥashā, Mina al-wajdi mā fīhā waradtu tharāʾī
If this desertion of yours continues, with all the longing that fills my heart, I will have gone down to my grave.
Yuʿayyirunī man lam yajid mā wajadtuhu, Bimā nālanī min waḥshatin waḍanāʾi
One who has never felt what I feel reproaches me for the loneliness and wasting that have befallen me.
Wafī al-qalbi shughlun ʿan samāʿi ntiqādihi, Bitaʾmīli waṣlin baʿda ṭūli tanāʾī
But my heart is too occupied to hear his criticism, hoping for union after long separation.
Aqūlu linafsī sāʿiyan fī khtibārihā, Tasallay bidunyā ʿanhumu wamunāʾi
I say to my soul, seeking to test it: "Console yourself with the world and its desires instead of them."
Faqālat akhulfun baʿda waʿdin waʿadtanī, Biʾaymani dhāti al-bāni yawma wanāʾī
It replied: "Will you break the promise you made me on the right side of the ban-tree valley, on the day I faltered?
Waqad aḍrama al-baynu al-mubarriḥu nārahu, Faqultu sayuṭfā ḥarruhu biliqāʾī
Separation's torment had kindled its fire, and I said its heat would be quenched when I met Him."
Walammā ḥadā bī ḥādiya ash-shawqi qāṣidan, Ilaykum bijunday fiṭratī wahawāʾī
And when longing's driver urged me on, heading toward you with the two armies of my nature and my desire,
Daʿatnī ilayhā dhātu makrin waḥīlatin, Waqālat anā al-maqṣūdu laysa siwāʾī
A woman of cunning and wiles called me to her, saying: "I am the goal, there is none besides me."
Faʾuffin lahā khaddāʿatun lā taghurrunī, Birawnaqihā al-mamdūdi fawqa khanāʾi
Fie on her, a deceiver! She will not beguile me with the lustre she spreads over foulness.
Tanaḥḥay tanaḥḥay lā salāman walā riḍan, Turīdīna qaṭʿī ʿan sabīli ghanāʾī
"Away, away! No peace and no welcome! You want to cut me off from the path of my true wealth."
Taḥaqqaqtu maṭlūbī faʾasraʿtu naḥwahu, Fadāma surūrī waḍmaḥalla ʿanāʾī
I realised what I sought and hastened toward it, so my joy endured and my hardship faded away.
Wadāma shuhūdī wastamarrat mawāsimī, Waṭāba zamānī wastatamma ṣafāʾī
My witnessing endured, my festive seasons continued, my time grew sweet and my purity was made complete.
Birabbī qiyāmī lā binafsī walā as-siwā, Fashukrī lahu subḥānahu wathanāʾī
I stand by my Lord, not by myself nor by anything else; so my thanks and my praise are His, glory be to Him.
