Ala Ya Sah Yasah

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Alā yā ṣāḥ yāṣāḥ, Lā tajzaʿ wataḍjar

O friend, O friend, do not grieve or be distressed.

Wasallim lilmaqādīr, Kay tuḥmad watuʾjar

Submit to what is decreed, that you may be praised and rewarded.

Wakun rāḍī bimā qadda, Ra al-mawlā wadabbar

Be content with what the Master has decreed and arranged,

Walā taskhaṭ qaḍā Allāh, Rabbi al-ʿarshi al-ʾakbar

And do not resent the decree of Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne.

Wakun ṣābir washākir

Be patient and grateful,

Takun fāyiz waẓāfir

And you will triumph and succeed,

Wamin ahli as-sarāʾir

And be among the people of inner secrets,

Rijālu Allāh min kulli, Dhī qalbin munawwar

The men of Allah, each with an illuminated heart,

Muṣaffan min jamīʿi ad-danas ṭayyib muṭahhar

Purified of every defilement, good and pure.

Wadhih dunyā daniyyah, Ḥawādithhā kathīrah

This world is lowly; its misfortunes are many,

Waʿīshathā ḥaqīrah, Wamuddathā qaṣīrah

Its life is contemptible, and its span is short.

Walā yaḥriṣ ʿalayhā, Siwā aʿmā al-baṣīrah

None is greedy for it but one whose insight is blind,

ʿadīmu al-ʿaqli law kan, Yaʿqil kāna afkar

Lacking in intellect; had he understood, he would have reflected,

Yufakkir fī fanāhā

Reflecting on its passing,

Wafī kathra ʿanāhā

On how great its toil,

Wafī qilla ghināhā

And how little its riches.

Faṭūbā thumma ṭūbā, Liman minhā taḥadhdhar

So blessed, and again blessed, is whoever is wary of it,

Waṭallaqhā wafī ṭā, ʿati ar-raḥman shammar

And divorces it, and in obedience to the Most Merciful rolls up his sleeves.

Alā yā ʿaynu jūdī, Bidamʿin minki sāʾil

O eye, weep generously with flowing tears

ʿalā dhāka al-ḥabībi al-ladhī qad kan nāzil

For that beloved who once dwelt

Maʿānā fī al-marābiʿ, Waʾaṣbaḥ safr rāḥil

With us in our encampments, and has now become a traveller departed,

Waʾamsā al-qalbu wa-al-bāl, Min baʿdih mukaddar

And heart and mind have become troubled since he left.

Walakin ḥasbiya Allāh

But Allah suffices me,

Wakullu al-ʾamri lillāh

And every matter belongs to Allah,

Walā yabqā siwā Allāh

And nothing remains but Allah.

ʿalā bashshār jādat, Saḥāʾib raḥmati al-barr

Upon Bashshar have poured the clouds of the Kind One's mercy,

Waḥayyāhum birawḥi ar-riḍā rabbī wabashshar

And my Lord has greeted them with the breath of His good pleasure and given them glad tidings.

Bihā sādātunā wa-ash-shuyūkhu al-ʿārifūnā

There lie our masters and the gnostic shaykhs,

Waʾahlūnā waʾaḥbāb, Qalbī nāzilūnā

Our family and the beloveds who dwell in my heart,

Waman hum fī sarāʾir, Fuʾādī qāṭinūnā

And those who reside in the secret depths of my soul,

Bisāḥah turbuhā min, Dhakiyyi al-miski aʿṭar

In a courtyard whose soil is more fragrant than the purest musk,

Manāzil khayri sādah

The dwellings of the best of masters,

Likulli an-nās qādah

Leaders of all people;

Maḥabbatuhum saʿādah

Love for them is happiness.

Alā yā bakht man zārahum bi-aṣ-ṣidqi wandhar

Oh, how fortunate is whoever visits them sincerely and turns

Ilayhim muʿtanī kullu maṭlūbuh tayassar

To them devotedly: his every request is made easy.

From the dīwān of Imam ʿAbdallāh ibn ʿAlawī al-Ḥaddād (d. 1132 AH / 1720 CE), al-Durr al-Manẓūm, printed edition Dār al-Ḥāwī, Beirut 1423/2002, pp. 258–261. Strophic poem: 4 stanzas of 9 lines.
