Al-Halu Ya Ahbabana Bibashhar
Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad
Al-ḥālu yā aḥbābanā bibashshār, Al-ʾahlu antum wa-al-ḥumāh wa-al-jār
How are you, our beloveds at Bashshar? You are our family, our protectors and our neighbours.
Jādat ʿalaykum ṣayyibātu al-ʾamṭār, Min raḥmati ar-rabbi al-ʿazīz midrār
May abundant rains pour upon you from the mercy of the Mighty Lord, in torrents.
Lillāhi min aḥbāb tatbaʿ aḥbāb, ʿalā al-ʾathar min sādatin waʾaṣḥāb
How wondrous are beloveds following beloveds upon the same track, masters and companions!
Mā antumu al-ʾaghrāb bal naḥā ghrāb, Fī hadhihi ad-dunyā maḥalli al-ʾakdār
You are not the strangers; rather we are the strangers in this world, the place of troubles,
Dāri al-fanā dāri al-ghurūr wa-az-zūr, Mā takhdaʿ al-ā kulla ʿabd maghrūr
The abode of passing away, the abode of delusion and falsehood, which deceives no one but the deluded servant,
Man lā baṣīrah luh walā maʿuh nūr, Law kan yubṣir laʿtabar biman ṣār
Who has no insight and no light with him; had he insight, he would take a lesson from those who have gone,
Biman ghadā liltturbi wa-al-maqābir, Mina al-ʾaṣāghir wamina al-ʾakābir
From those who went to the dust and the graves, the small and the great alike,
Wa-al-baʿthu baʿda al-mawt lilmaḥāshir, Farīq fī al-jannah wafarīq fī an-nār
And from the resurrection after death to the places of gathering: a party in the Garden and a party in the Fire.
Yā ahla al-barāzikh barzakhi as-salāmah, Wa-ar-rawḥ wa-ar-rayḥān wa-al-karāmah
O people of the barzakh, the barzakh of safety, of rest, fragrance and honour,
Lā dākhalatkum ḥasratu an-nadāmah, Walā bariḥtum fī surūr waʾanwār
May the pang of regret never enter upon you, and may you never cease to be in joy and light.
Matā matā yā aḥbābanā at-talāqī, Min baʿdi ṭūli al-buʿdi wa-al-firāqi
When, when, our beloveds, will we meet after long distance and parting?
Mā ḥad ʿalā ad-dunyā al-ghurūr bāqī, Wa-al-mawtu tuḥfatu kulli ʿabd mukhtār
No one remains in this deceiving world, and death is the gift of every chosen servant,
Yaṣbir ʿalā aṭ-ṭāʿāt wa-al-qanāʿah, Wa-al-faqr wa-al-ʾiqlāl wa-al-majāʿah
Who is patient in obedience and contentment, in poverty, scarcity and hunger.
Famā ash-shajāʿah ghayr ṣabr sāʿah, Wa-al-fawz fī al-ʿuqbā likulli ṣabbār
Courage is nothing but an hour's patience, and triumph in the Hereafter belongs to all who persevere.
The grave is either a garden of bliss, yes, or else a pit of Hellfire.
Faʿmal linafsik lā takun bahīmah, Tajrī walā tadrī biʿuẓmi al-ʾakhṭār
So work for yourself; do not be a beast that runs on, unaware of how great the dangers are.
Fallāhu yarḥam jamʿanā bifaḍlih, Walā yuʿāmilnā biqisṭi ʿadlih
May Allah have mercy on our company by His grace, and not deal with us by the measure of His justice,
Bibarkati al-hādī khitāmi ruslih, Aḥmad imāmi al-muttaqīna al-ʾabrār
By the blessing of the guide, the seal of His messengers, Ahmad, imam of the God-fearing and the righteous.
