Ahlan Wasahlan bi-z-Zabyi al-Aghyad

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Ahlan wasahlan bi-aẓ-ẓabyi al-ʾaghyad, Mukaḥḥali al-ʿaynayni wardī al-khad

Welcome, welcome to the graceful gazelle, with kohl-dark eyes and rosy cheeks,

ʿadhbi al-lamā ad-durriy rushayyiqi al-qadd, Wāfā ḥimānā fī aṣ-ṣabāḥ al-ʾasʿad

Sweet-lipped, pearl-toothed, slender of form, who came to our sanctuary on the most fortunate morning.

Faqultu khayyim yā malīḥ yā ziyn, Wabshir faqad aṣbaḥta qurrata al-ʿiyn

I said: "Pitch your tent, O lovely one, O fair one, and rejoice, for you have become the delight of my eye.

Falā tudhawwiqnī marārata al-biyn, Wa-al-buʿdu minka yā ghazāl thahmad

Do not make me taste the bitterness of parting and distance from you, O gazelle of Thahmad.

Walā taʿaddā yā ẓubayya ʿaydīd, Fī rabʿinā tarʿā al-wafā bitaʾkīd

Do not stray beyond 'Idid, little gazelle; graze in our dwelling, keeping faith firmly.

Sāʿāt waṣlak kulluhā lanā ʿīd, Waʾanta lī fī al-ghāniyāt maqṣad

All the hours of union with you are a festival for us, and you are my aim among all the beauties."

Lammā badā lī wajhuka al-munawwar, Kaʾannahu badru at-tamāmi asfar

When your radiant face appeared to me, as though it were the full moon unveiled,

Ayqantu anna ash-shūsha ʿanniya dbar, Waʾanna ʿahda al-ʾunsi qad tajaddad

I was certain that confusion had left me, and that the time of intimacy had been renewed.

Fa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi al-ladhī takarram, Wanaffasa al-kurbah wafarraja al-hamm

So praise be to Allah, who was generous, relieved the distress and dispelled the worry.

Wabaʿdu ṣallā Allāhu thumma sallam, ʿalā an-nabiyyi al-hāshimiyyi muḥammad

And then, may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Hashimite Prophet, Muhammad.

From the dīwān of Imam ʿAbdallāh ibn ʿAlawī al-Ḥaddād (d. 1132 AH / 1720 CE), al-Durr al-Manẓūm, printed edition Dār al-Ḥāwī, Beirut 1423/2002, pp. 171–173. Strophic poem: 5 stanzas of 2 lines.
