Ahibbatana Binajdin wa-s-Safih

Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad

Aḥibbatanā binajdin wa-aṣ-ṣafīḥi, Marāhima kulli dhī qalbin jarīḥi

O beloveds in Najd and al-Safih, balm for every wounded heart,

ʿasā ʿaṭfan ʿalā danifin kaʾībin, Ḥazīni al-qalbi munkasirin ṭarīḥi

Perhaps you will show kindness to one sick and sorrowful, grieving of heart, broken and cast down.

Wahal min raḥmatin minkum liṣabbin, Ṣabā qidman ilā al-ʾawji al-fasīḥi

Is there any mercy from you for a lover who long ago yearned for the vast summit?

Lahu rūḥun taḥinnu likhayri ʿahdin, Bimaʿhadihā al-ʾanīsi mina as-sufūḥi

He has a spirit that longs for the best of times in its familiar haunt upon the hillsides,

Binaʿmāni al-ʾarāki waʾayyu akhdhin, Faqul lī ʿanhu bi-an-nuṭqi al-faṣīḥi

At Na'man of the arak trees; and what a captivation! So tell me of it in eloquent speech.

Wamil bī yamnatan ʿan ṭūri nafsin, Ilā ṭūri as-sarāʾiri wa-al-munūḥi

Turn me to the right, away from the mountain of the self, to the mountain of inmost secrets and gifts,

Laʿalliy an unādā min qarībin, Famā al-muʿṭī taqaddasa bi-ash-shaḥīḥi

That perhaps I may be called from nearby; for the Giver, holy is He, is not miserly.

Walakinnā ḥujibnā bi-al-ʾamānī, Wabi-al-kawni al-kathīfi wabi-an-nuzūḥi

But we are veiled by wishes, by the dense world and by distance.

Fahayyā bi-al-qulūbi ilā ḥimāhā, Wamaghnāhā wamawṭini kulli rūḥi

So come, let us take our hearts to its sanctuary, its dwelling, the homeland of every spirit.

Faʾinna ar-rūḥa min malakūti ghaybin, Tanazzuluhā limatjarihā ar-rabīḥi

For the spirit is from the unseen kingdom; it descends only for its profitable trade.

Waʾinna al-jisma min ṭīnin wamāʾin, Yamīlu ilā al-ḥuẓūẓi bikulli rīḥi

And the body is of clay and water, bending toward pleasures with every wind.

Fawajjih ḥaythu shiʾta faʾanta mimmā, Lahu wajjahta fakhtar lilmalīḥi

So turn wherever you will, for you belong to whatever you turn toward; so choose what is beautiful.

Wajānib kulla safsāfin wanukrin, Mina al-ʾakhlāqi wa-al-ʿamali al-qabīḥi

Avoid every base and reprehensible trait of character and every ugly deed.

Wasāfir fī as-sabīli ilā al-maʿālī, Bijiddin wastamiʿ qawla an-naṣīḥi

Travel the path to the heights earnestly, and listen to the words of the sincere adviser.

Walā tuʾthir ʿalā ar-raḥmani shayʾan, Taʿālā qābilu at-tawbi an-naṣūḥi

Prefer nothing to the Most Merciful, exalted is He, Accepter of sincere repentance,

Ilahun wāḥidun malikun ʿaẓīmun, Tusabbiḥuhu malāʾikatu aṣ-ṣafīḥi

One God, a mighty King, glorified by the angels of the heavens.
