Ya Sa'da Qawm

Abu Madyan al-Tilimsani

How fortunate a people who triumphed through Allah, and saw none but Him in creation!

Qarrabahum minhu wajtabāhum, Fanazzahū al-fikra fī ʿulāhu

He drew them near to Him and chose them, so they kept their thoughts pure in His loftiness.

Laysa lahum lilssiwā at-tifātu, Kayfa waqad shāhadū sanāhu

They pay no attention to anything else; how could they, when they have witnessed His radiance?

Azāla ḥujba al-ghiṭāʾi ʿanhum, Fastanshaqū nafḥata hawāhu

He removed the veils of covering from them, so they breathed the fragrance of His love.

Tajallā bi-an-nūri wa-al-bahāʾi, Lahum faqālū yā huwa yā hū

He manifested to them in light and splendour, and they said: "O He, O He!"

Faqāla anā lakum muḥibbun, Rabbun karīmun niʿma al-ʾilahu

He said: "I love you; I am a Generous Lord, the best of gods.

Aqbalu man tāba min ʿibādī, Walā ubālī bimā janāhu

I accept whoever of My servants repents, and I do not mind what he has done.

Al-mulku mulkī wa-al-ʾamru amrī, Wa-al-ʿizzu ʿizzī fadkhul ḥimāhu

Sovereignty is Mine, the command is Mine, might is Mine": so enter His sanctuary.

Mā dhāqa ṭaʿma al-gharāmi illā, Man ʿarafa al-waṣla aw darāhu

None has tasted the taste of passion except one who has known union or understood it.

Mā qultu lilqalbi ayyu ḥibbī, Illā waqāla aḍ-ḍamīru Allāhu

Never have I asked my heart, "Who is my beloved?" But my inner self said: "Allah."

Innī idhā mā dhakartu rabbī, Ahtazzu shawqan ilā liqāhu

Whenever I remember my Lord, I tremble with longing to meet Him.

Ahīmu waḥdī biṣidqi wajdī, Waḥusni qaṣdī ʿasā arāhu

I wander alone with sincere ecstasy and good intention, hoping to see Him.

Fanẓur ilā al-kawni biʿtibārin, Fī arḍi mawlāka wasamāhu

So look at creation with reflection, in your Master's earth and in His sky,

Wasmaʿ idhā ghannati al-mathānī, Taqūlu yā hū labbayka Allāhu

And listen when the strings sing: they say, "O He! Here I am, O Allah!"

Thumma aṣ-ṣalātu ʿalā ar-rasūli, Muḥammadun rabbunā ṣṭafāhu

Then blessings upon the Messenger, Muhammad, whom our Lord chose.
