Wishlun Anam al-Layl

Wishlūn anāma al-layl wishlūn anāmuh, Ḥabībī muḥammad jawhar kalāmuh

How can I sleep at night, how can I sleep, when my beloved Muhammad's words are jewels?

Saffin bi-al-lah yā saffān dīri as-safīna, Anwār abā al-qāsim lāḥit ʿalaynā

Sail, by Allah, O sailor, turn the ship; the lights of Abu al-Qasim have shone upon us.

Yārāfiqa al-ʿurbān washrab labanhin, Kulli aṣ-ṣaḥāba njūm ṭaha qamarhin

O companion of the Bedouin, drink their milk; all the Companions are stars, and Taha is their moon.

Yā ṭayra aṭ-ṭāyir fūq abyaḍ yā bū jnāḥ, Sallim ʿalā abī az-zahrāʾ qulluh al-ʿumur rāḥ

O bird flying over the white, O winged one, greet the father of al-Zahra', tell him my life has passed.

Yā ṭayra aṭ-ṭāyir fūq akhḍar yā bū rīsh, Sallim ʿalā ṭaha qulluh darāwīsh

O bird flying over the green, O feathered one, greet Taha, tell him: "We are your dervishes."

Mā rīda amūta al-yawm kafnī ʿabātī, Dizzū ʿalā ṭaha yiḥḍar wafātī

I do not want to die today with my cloak as my shroud; send word to Taha to be present at my death.
