Wasaluni Ba'da Bu'di

Afif al-Din al-Tilimsani

They granted me union after my distance, and kept their former pledge to me,

Waʿalā raghmi al-ḥasūdi, Anjazū bi-al-waṣli waʿdī

And in spite of the envious they fulfilled their promise of union.

Yā surūrī bi-at-tadānī, Yā hanā ḥaẓẓī wasaʿdī

O my joy at nearness! O the happiness of my fortune and luck!

Jāda lī badrī biwaṣli, Yā hanāʾī niltu qaṣdī

My full moon granted me union; O my happiness, I have attained my aim!

Fajtamiʿ yā māʾa ʿaynī, Wanṭafī yā nāra wajdī

So gather, O water of my eyes, and be quenched, O fire of my ecstasy!

Anā fī laylati unsī, Qad ṣafā mawridu wirdī

I am in my night of intimacy; the spring I drink from has grown pure.

Watanāwaltu kuʾūsī, Bayna rayḥānin wawardi

I took my cups among sweet basil and roses

Min yaday ḥulwi at-tathannī, Fātinin ahyafi qaddi

From the hands of one sweet in his swaying, captivating, slender of form.

Tāratan yunshidu khudh kāsī, Waṭawran hāka khaddī

Now he sings, "Take my cup," and now, "Here is my cheek."

In aqul yā alfa mawlā, Qāla lī yā alfa ʿabdī

If I say, "O my master a thousand times," he says to me, "O my servant a thousand times."

Aw saqā al-mamzūja ghayrī, Khaṣṣanī bi-aṣ-ṣirfi waḥdī

If he gives others the mixed drink, he singles me out for the pure.

Fī hawāhu daʿ malāmī, Waṭṭariḥ ghayyī warushdī

In his love, leave your blame, and cast aside my error and my right guidance.

Nāru wajdī fī hawāhu, Kanaʿīmi al-khuldi ʿindī

The fire of my ecstasy in his love is to me like the bliss of eternity.
