Wa-Lamma Qasa Qalbi wa-Daqat Madhahibi

Imam al-Shafii

Walammā qasā qalbī waḍāqat madhāhibī, Jaʿaltu ar-rajā minnī liʿafwika sullamā

When my heart grew hard and my ways grew narrow, I made my hope in Your pardon a ladder.

Taʿāẓamanī dhanbī falammā qarantuhu, Biʿafwika rabbī kāna ʿafwuka aʿẓamā

My sin seemed enormous to me, but when I set it beside Your pardon, my Lord, Your pardon was greater.

Famā zilta dhā ʿafwin ʿani adh-dhanbi lam tazal, Tajūdu wataʿfū minnatan watakarrumā

You have always pardoned sin, and You never cease to give and to forgive, out of grace and generosity.

Falawlāka lam yaṣmud liʾiblīsa ʿābidun, Fakayfa waqad aghwā ṣafiyyaka ʾādamā

Were it not for You, no worshipper could withstand Iblis; how could he, when he led astray Your chosen one, Adam?

Falillahi darru al-ʿārifi an-nadbi innahu, Tafīḍu lifarṭi al-wajdi ajfānuhu damā

How excellent is the noble knower of Allah! His eyelids overflow with blood from the intensity of his longing.

Yuqīmu idhā mā al-laylu madda ẓalāmahu, ʿalā nafsihi min shiddati al-khawfi maʾtamā

When the night spreads out its darkness, he holds a mourning over himself from the intensity of his fear.

Faṣīḥan idhā mā kāna fī dhikri rabbihi, Wafī mā siwāhu fī al-warā kāna aʿjamā

Eloquent when he is engaged in the remembrance of his Lord, but in anything else among people, he is as if mute.

Wayadhkuru ayyāman maḍat min shabābihi, Wamā kāna fīhā bi-al-jahālati ajramā

He recalls days of his youth that have passed, and the wrongs he committed in them out of ignorance.

Faṣāra qarīna al-hammi ṭūla nahārihi, Akhā as-suhdi wa-an-najwā idhā al-laylu aẓlamā

So he became sorrow's companion all day long, the brother of sleeplessness and intimate prayer when night falls.

Yaqūlu ḥabībī anta suʾlī wabughyatī, Kafā bika lilrrājīna suʾlan wamaghnamā

He says: "My Beloved, You are my request and my desire; You suffice those who hope, as their request and their prize.

Alasta al-ladhī ghadhdhaytanī wahadaytanī, Walā zilta mannānan ʿalayya wamunʿimā

Are You not the One who nourished me and guided me, and never ceased to be generous and gracious to me?

ʿasā man lahu al-ʾiḥsānu yaghfiru zallatī, Wayasturu awzārī wamā qad taqaddamā

Perhaps the One to whom all goodness belongs will forgive my slip, and cover my burdens and all that has gone before."
