Abd al-Rahman al-Majdhub

Tashawwaqat rūḥī lishaṭṭi al-wādī, Fahā anā dhā rabbī khudh biyadī

My spirit longs for the bank of the valley; here I am, my Lord: take my hand.

Abītu al-layālī jahran unādī, Faqalbī yadhūbu mina al-kamadi

I spend the nights calling out aloud, for my heart is melting with grief.

Ramānī al-ʿudhdhālu bifarṭi al-hawā, Faqālū juninta fawā jaladī

The blamers accused me of excessive love, and said, "You have gone mad." Oh, my endurance!

Maḥabbatu Allāhi nārun mūqada, Tubīdu bi-ar-rūḥi wabi-al-jasadi

The love of Allah is a kindled fire that consumes spirit and body.

Fadharratu ḥubbin lilmawlā ar-raḥīm, Tuzīlu al-humūma yawma at-tanādī

An atom of love for the Merciful Master removes all worries on the Day of Calling.

ʿashiqtu al-ʾilaha walā ṣabra lī, Faḥurqatu ḥubbihi fī fuʾādī

I am in love with God and have no patience; the burning of His love is in my heart.

Uḥibbuka yā mubdiʿa al-kāʾināt, Waḥaqqika rabbī anta murādī

I love You, O Originator of all beings; by Your truth, my Lord, You are my desire.

Laka al-ḥamdu rabbī ʿalā kulli ḥāl, Faʾanta al-wāḥidu bilā ʿadadin

To You be praise, my Lord, in every state, for You are the One beyond all number.

Yā ahla al-hawā wallāhi innakum, Fī ladhīdhi ʿayshin ilā al-ʾabadi

O people of love, by Allah, you are in a sweet life forever.
