Sirri Ladayha Tabadda

Sirrī ladayhā tabaddā, Faqultu kūnī amīna

My secret appeared before her, and I said: "Be trustworthy."

Waʾabḥarat fī khuṭāhā, Wa-al-qalbu dhikrun liṭaha

And I sailed in her footsteps, with my heart a remembrance of Taha,

Wa-al-ʿaynu ajrat jumānan, Yarwī jamāla al-madīna

And my eye shed pearls that tell of the beauty of Medina.

Fatamtamat muqlatāhā, Wa-ad-durru ghannā watāha

Her eyes murmured, and the pearls sang and lost themselves,

Yaqūlu ḥaqqan sanaghdū, Baʿda an-nawā fī al-madīna

Saying: "Truly we shall be, after the distance, in Medina."

Wafāḥa ʿiṭru al-jināni, Famā malaktu janānī

The perfume of the Gardens spread, and I could not hold my heart;

Kaʾannahu ṭāra minnī, Idh shamma rīḥa al-madīna

It was as though it flew from me when it smelled the scent of Medina.

Alfaytu fīhā al-ḥanānā, Wadhuqtu fīhā al-ʾamānā

I found tenderness there, and tasted safety there;

Balaghtu asmā jiwārin, Lammā raʾaytu al-madīna

I reached the loftiest neighbourhood when I saw Medina.
