Salu Fu'adi Saluhu fa-Huwa Yukhbirukum

Muhammad al-Salihi al-Hilali

Salū fuʾādī salūhu fahwa yukhbirukum, ʿannī idhā ghibtum idh fīhi maḥḍarukum

Ask my heart, ask it, and it will tell you about me when you are absent, for you are present in it.

Ayā budūran anāra al-kawna maẓharukum, Lawlā taʿallulu qalbī ḥīna adhkurukum

O full moons whose appearance lit up creation, were it not for my heart's solace when I mention you,

Wawaḍʿu kaffī ʿalayhi janna awṭāran, Law shāba damʿī biḥāra al-ʾarḍi aghraqahā

And my placing my hand upon it, it would have run wild with longing. Were my tears to mix with the seas of the earth, they would drown them,

Min muqlatin ḥarru nāri ash-shawqi arraqahā, Wa-al-wajdu qassama aḥshāʾī wafarraqahā

Tears from an eye kept sleepless by the heat of longing's fire, while ecstasy has divided and scattered my insides.

Law qarrabū an-nāra min qalbī laʾaḥraqahā, Fahal samiʿtum biqalbin aḥraqa an-nārā

Were they to bring fire near my heart, it would burn it; have you ever heard of a heart that burned fire?
