Sallu Ala an-Nuri Ahmad

Umar al-Mihdar

Ṣallū ʿalā an-nūri aḥmad, Nūri al-manāzil yā muḥammad

Send blessings on the light, Ahmad, light of every station, O Muhammad!

Ahlan wasahlan biḥibbī, Yā man sakan wasṭ qalbī

Welcome, welcome to my beloved, O you who dwell in the midst of my heart,

Wafī al-hawā ṣāra ḥasbī, Hadhih maqādīr rabbī

And in love have become my sufficiency; this is my Lord's decree.

Mā ḥad bulī qaṭṭ mithlī, Anā al-ʿuqayyiq fī ahlī

No one has ever been tried as I have; I am the little gem among my people,

Waqad ʿathartu bijahlī, Yā rīḥa al-ʾaḥbāb hibbī

Yet I stumbled through my ignorance; O wind of the beloveds, blow!

Yā man naẓar ʿarḍa qatba, Qad shamma rīḥa al-maḥabba

Whoever has looked across Qatba has smelled the scent of love;

Man lam yashummi al-maḥabba, Falays luh qaṭṭ ṭibbī

Whoever has not smelled love has no cure from me.

Qalbī muʿallaq maʿāhum, Fī arḍihim wasamāhum

My heart is attached to them, in their earth and in their sky,

Walays ʿindī kamāhum, ʿarrij bihim yawma ghibbī

And I have none like them; turn aside to them on the day I am absent.

Kam lī uqallib khiṣālī, Ayyāmahā wa-al-layālī

How long I have turned over my traits, through their days and nights!

Al-barru wa-al-baḥru mālī, Wazarʿuhum minhu ḥabbī

Land and sea are my wealth, and from their harvest comes my love.

Yā layt lī ʿaynun tanẓur, Aw ʿindahum kuntu aḥḍur

Would that I had an eye that sees, or could be present with them!

Narʿā al-jamīl thumma nashkur, Wānā murāʿī mulabbī

We keep their kindness, then give thanks, and I am watchful and ready to answer.
