Sallu Ala an-Nuri adh-Dhi Araja as-Sama

Habib Ali bin Muhammad al-Habashi

Ṣallū ʿalā an-nūri al-ladhī ʿaraja as-samā, Yā fawza man ṣallā ʿalayhi wasallamā

Send blessings on the light who ascended to heaven; how fortunate is whoever blesses him and greets him with peace!

Jādat sulaymā bi-al-wiṣāli takarrumā, Fasarā as-surūru ilā al-fuʾādi wakhayyamā

Sulayma granted union out of generosity, and joy flowed into my heart and settled there.

Yā ḥusna mā jādat bihi fī waṣlihā, Ahlan biwaṣlin fīhi niltu al-maghnamā

How lovely is what she granted in her union! Welcome to a union in which I attained the prize!

Minanun tasāraʿati al-ʿuqūlu linaylihā, Wahibātu faḍlin awrathatnā anʿumā

Favours that minds raced to attain, and gifts of grace that bequeathed us blessings.

Yā ḥādiya al-ʿīsi ar-rawāsimi ʿuj bihā, Safḥa al-ʿaqīqi waḥuṭṭa raḥlaka fī al-ḥimā

O driver of the striding camels, turn them to the slope of al-'Aqiq, and set down your saddle in the sanctuary,

Fī manzili al-jūdi al-ghazīri wamanbaʿi, Al-faḍli al-kabīri wakhayri majdin qad namā

In the dwelling of abundant generosity, the source of great bounty and the finest glory that has grown,

Fī jannatin mā shāqanī min waṣfihā, Illā likawni al-ḥibbi fīhā khayyamā

In a garden whose description has stirred my longing only because the beloved has pitched his tent there.

Famatā arāhā lāthimaan liturābihā, Yā laytanī liltturbi dhālika althamā

When will I see it, kissing its soil? Would that I could kiss that very soil!

Rifqaan biqalbin fī al-hawā mutaʿalliqin, Bimaṭāmiʿin yarjū bihā an yukramā

Be gentle with a heart that, in love, clings to hopes by which it hopes to be honoured.

Innī idhā dhukirat manāzilu sādatī, Kādat dumūʿu al-ʿayni an tajrī damā

When the dwellings of my masters are mentioned, the tears of my eyes almost flow as blood.

Aw shāhadat ʿaynāya mawṭina qurbihim, Alfaytanī aḥramtu fī man aḥramā

And if my eyes beheld the place of their nearness, you would find me entering ihram among those in ihram.

Qasamaan birabbi al-bayti mā dhukira an-naqā, Wa-al-munḥanā illā wakuntu mutayyamā

I swear by the Lord of the House: never are al-Naqa and the winding valley mentioned but I am enthralled.

Yā laylatan bāta al-ḥabību yudīru min, Kaʾsi al-wiṣāli mudāmatan mā anʿamā

O night in which the beloved passed around, from the cup of union, a wine so blissful!

Shawqī ilā dāri al-ḥabībi muḥammadin, Shawqun tamakkana fī al-ḥashā watakattamā

My longing for the home of the beloved, Muhammad, is a longing rooted deep in my heart and kept hidden.

Dārun ḥawat niʿama al-ʾilahi jamīʿahā, Mudh ḥalla fīhā khayru ʿabdin qad samā

A home that has held all the blessings of God since the best of servants, who rose so high, dwelt there.
