Salla Allah Alayka Ya Nur

Shaykh Ahmad al-Alawi

Ṣallā Allāh ʿalayka yā nūr, Yā nuwra kulli al-manāzil

May Allah bless you, O light, O light of every station.

Yā rasuwla Allāhi anta, Anta an-nuwru al-mutashakkil

O Messenger of Allah, you, you are the light given form.

Nūrun ʿalā nūrin jiʾta, Bihi al-qurʾānu tanazzal

Light upon light you came; the Qur'an descended with it.

Mishkātan nuwran wazaytā, Ḍiyāʾan jiʾta muʿtadil

A niche, a light and oil, a radiance, you came in perfect balance.

Lā yakuwnu al-kawnu ḥattā, Yaẓhar bika mutajammil

Creation could not be until it appeared, adorned, through you.

Anta fī al-ʾāthāri qulta, Dhā al-kawnu minka tamaththal

You said in the traditions that this creation took its form from you.

Min ḥaḍrati al-qudsi jiʾta, Waʾanta fīhā lam tazal

From the Presence of Holiness you came, and there you have never ceased to be.

Kunta qabla al-kawni kunta, Wa-al-ʾabadu mithlu al-ʾazal

You were before creation, you were, and eternity without end is like eternity without beginning.

Muṭlaqan kunta faṣirtā, Bi-al-quyuwdi mutajammil

You were absolute, then you became adorned with limits.

Laysa fī al-wujūdi al-batta, Illā an-nūru qultu ajal

There is nothing at all in existence but the light; I said: yes indeed.

Badā mina al-ghaybi baghta, Min aʿlā al-ʿulā tanazzal

It appeared suddenly from the Unseen, descending from the highest heights.

Yā rasuwla Allāhi ḥuztā, Faḍla al-faḍli wa-al-faḍāʾil

O Messenger of Allah, you have won the grace of grace and every virtue.

Yā rasūla Allāhi dumta, Wadumtu laka mumtathil

O Messenger of Allah, may you endure, and may I ever remain obedient to you.

Fa-al-ʿalāwiyi yarjū ḥattā, Yablugh biriḍāka al-ʾamal

Al-'Alawi hopes that through your good pleasure he may reach his hope.

Yā rasuwla Allāhi anta, Anta an-nuwru al-mutashakkil

O Messenger of Allah, you, you are the light given form.
