Salamun Salam
Salāmun salāmun kamiski al-khitām, ʿalaykum uḥaybābanā yā kirām
Peace, peace like the musk of the seal, upon you, our dear beloveds, O noble ones,
Waman dhikruhum unsunā fī aẓ-ẓalām, Wanūrun lanā bayna hadhā al-ʾanām
Whose remembrance is our intimacy in the dark, and a light for us among these people.
Sakantum fuʾādī warabbi al-ʿibād, Waʾantum marāmī waʾaqṣā al-murād
You have dwelt in my heart, by the Lord of His servants, and you are my aim and my furthest desire.
Fahal tusʿidūnī biṣafwi al-widād, Wahal tamnaḥūnī sharīfa al-maqām
Will you make me happy with pure love, and will you grant me a noble station?
Anā ʿabdukum yā uhayla al-wafā, Wafī qurbikum marhamī wa-ash-shifā
I am your servant, O dear people of faithfulness, and in your nearness is my balm and my healing.
Falā tusqimūnī biṭūli al-jafā, Wamunnū biwaṣlin walaw fī al-manām
So do not make me ill with long estrangement, but grant union, even if in a dream.
Amūtu waʾaḥyā ʿalā ḥubbikum, Wadhullī ladaykum waʿizzī bikum
I die and live upon your love; my humility is before you and my honour through you.
Warāḥātu rūḥī rajā qurbikum, Waʿazmī waqaṣdī ilaykum dawām
The repose of my spirit is the hope of your nearness, and my resolve and my aim are toward you forever.
Falā ʿishtu in kāna qalbī sakan, Ilā al-buʿdi ʿan ahlihi wa-al-waṭan
May I not live if my heart has grown at ease with distance from its people and its homeland,
Waman ḥubbuhum fī al-ḥashā qad qaṭan, Wakhāmara minnī jamīʿa al-ʿiẓām
And from those whose love has settled in my heart and permeated all my bones.
Idhā marra bi-al-qalbi dhikru al-ḥabīb, Wawādī al-ʿaqīqi wadhāka al-kathīb
When the mention of the beloved passes through the heart, and of the valley of al-'Aqiq and that dune,
Yamīlu kamayli al-qaḍībi ar-raṭīb, Wayahtazzu min shawqihi wa-al-gharām
It sways like a tender branch, and trembles with longing and passion.
Amūtu wamā zurtu dhāka al-finā, Watilka al-khiyāma wafīhā al-munā
I will die without having visited that courtyard, and those tents where my wishes lie,
Walam adnu yawman maʿa man danā, Lilathmi al-muḥayyā washurbi al-mudām
Never having drawn near one day with those who drew near, to kiss the face and drink the wine.
Laʾin kāna hadhā fayā ghurbatī, Wayā ṭūla ḥuznī wayā kurbatī
If this is so, oh, my exile! Oh, my long grief, oh, my distress!
Walī ḥusnu ẓannin bihi qurbatī, Birabbī waḥasbī bihi yā ghulām
Yet my good opinion is my nearness to my Lord, and He suffices me, young man.
ʿasā Allāhu yashfī ghalīla aṣ-ṣudūd, Biwaṣli al-ḥabāyib wafakki al-quyūd
Perhaps Allah will heal the burning thirst of rejection with union with the beloveds and the loosening of chains,
Farabbī raḥīmun karīmun wadūd, Yajūdu ʿalā man yashā bi-al-marām
For my Lord is Merciful, Generous, Loving; He grants whom He wills their desire.
