Qultu Lamma Ghaba Anni

Umar al-Batsh

Qultu lammā ghāba ʿannī, Nūru marāka al-maṣūn

I said, when the light of your guarded face vanished from me:

Shaffanī wa-al-lahi suqmun, Fīhi qad dhuqtu al-manūna

"By Allah, an illness has wasted me in which I have tasted death,

Waʿuyūnī min naḥībin, Jāriyātun ka-al-ʿuyūn

And my eyes, from sobbing, flow like springs,

Wajufūnī mā kafāhā, Mā jarā ḥattā jafūn

And my eyelids were not satisfied with what had flowed, until they shunned me.

Hāma qalbī zāda wajdī, Famatā waṣlak yakūnu

My heart is distraught, my ecstasy has grown; when will union with you be?

Ghāba ʿan ʿaynī ḍiyāhā, Yā qamara dārī al-ʿuyūn

Its radiance has vanished from my eyes; O moon, keep yourself hidden from prying eyes!"
