Qana'tu bi-l-Quti Min Zamani

Imam al-Shafii

Qaniʿtu bi-al-qūti min zamānī, Waṣuntu nafsī ʿani al-hawāni

I have contented myself with bare sustenance from my time, and kept my soul from humiliation,

Khawfan mina an-nāsi an yaqūlū, Faḍlu fulānin ʿalā fulāni

For fear that people would say: "So-and-so has done a favour for so-and-so."

Man kuntu ʿan mālihi ghaniyyan, Falā ubālī idhā jafānī

Whoever's wealth I have no need of, I do not care if he turns away from me.

Waman raʾānī biʿayni naqṣin, Raʾaytuhu billatī raʾānī

Whoever looks on me with the eye of contempt, I look on him just as he looked on me.

Waman raʾānī biʿayni tammin, Raʾaytuhu kāmila al-maʿānī

And whoever looks on me with the eye of esteem, I see him as perfect in every quality.
