Nasamatu Hawaka Laha Araj

Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi

Nasamātu hawāka lahā araju, Taḥyā wataʿīshu bihā al-muhaju

The breezes of Your love have a fragrance by which hearts live and thrive.

Dakhalū fuqarāʾa ilā ad-dunyā, Wakamā dakhalū minhā kharajū

They entered the world poor, and just as they entered it, they left it.

Qawmun faʿalū khayran faʿalaw, Waʿalā daraji al-ʿalyā darajū

A people who did good and rose high, and climbed the steps of the heights.

Yā badru ʿalāma al-hajru dujā, Fa-al-qalbu lifaqdika yanzaʿiju

O full moon, why this desertion in the dark? The heart is distressed at losing you.

Lā aʿtibu qalba al-ghāfili ʿanka, Falaysa ʿalā al-ʾaʿmā ḥaraju

I do not reproach the heart that is heedless of You, for there is no blame upon the blind.

Yā muddaʿiyan liṭarīqihimu, Bādir faṭarīquka munʿaraju

O you who claim to follow their path, hurry, for your path is crooked.

Tahwā laylā watanāmu al-layl, Laʿamruka dhā fiʿlun samiju

You love Layla and sleep through the night? By your life, that is an ugly deed!

Yā badru badhlin lan nabraḥa, ʿan bābi al-ḥibbi fahal naliju

O full moon of generosity, we will not leave the door of the beloved; may we enter?

Famatā biwiṣālika yā amalī, Alḥānu al-ḥubbi lahā hazaju

When, through union with you, O my hope, will the melodies of love sound in the hazaj?

Sharibū bikuʾūsi tafakkurihim, Min ṣirfi hawāka wamā mazajū

They drank, in the cups of their contemplation, the pure wine of Your love, and did not mix it.

Fahumu al-maʿnā fahumu maʿnā, Wabidhikri Allāhi lahum lahaju

They understood the meaning, for they are meaning; and their tongues are ever eager with the remembrance of Allah.
