مَتَى قَلْبُ الشَّجِي الْمُضْنَى لِمَغْنَاكُمْ يَعُودْ

مَتَى قَلْبُ الشَّجِي الْمُضْنَى لِمَغْنَاكُمْ يَعُودْوَشَمْسُ الحَضْرَةِ الْحَسْنَا تُوَافِي بِالشُّهُودْ

Matā qalbu ash-shajī al-muḍnā limaghnākum yaʿūd, Washamsu al-ḥaḍrati al-ḥasnā tuwāfī bi-ash-shuhūd

When will the sorrowful, wasted heart return to your dwelling, and the beautiful sun of the Presence arrive with witnessing?

كَوَوْا فِي جَمْرَةِ الْحُبِّ فُؤَادَ الْمُسْتَهَامْوَخَطْبِي فِيهِمُ خَطْبِي وَقَدْ شَبَّ الْغَرَامْ

Kawaw fī jamrati al-ḥubbi fuʾāda al-mustahām, Wakhaṭbī fīhimu khaṭbī waqad shabba al-gharām

They branded the infatuated lover's heart in the embers of love; my plight with them is great, and passion has blazed up.

وَدَمْعِي وَالضَّنَا يُنْبِي عَنِ الْوَجْدِ الضِّرَامْوَفِيهِمْ طَابَ لِي سَلْبِي وَلَوْ طَالَ الصُّدُودْ

Wadamʿī wa-aḍ-ḍanā yunbī ʿani al-wajdi aḍ-ḍirām, Wafīhim ṭāba lī salbī walaw ṭāla aṣ-ṣudūd

My tears and my wasting tell of a blazing ecstasy, yet being plundered by them is sweet to me, however long the rejection.

أَلَا يَا حَادِيَ الرَّكْبِ فَأَوْجِزْ لِي الطَّرِيقْوَسِرْ بِاللَّهِ فِي قَلْبِي إِلَى أَعْلَى رَفِيقْ

Alā yā ḥādiya ar-rakbi faʾawjiz lī aṭ-ṭarīq, Wasir bi-al-lahi fī qalbī ilā aʿlā rafīq

O driver of the caravan, shorten the road for me, and travel, by Allah, within my heart to the Highest Companion.

وَإِنْ وَافَى سَنَا الْحِبِّ فَخَيِّمْ بِالْعَقِيقْوَشَفِّعْ بِذَوِي الْقُرْبِ عَسَى حِبِّي يِجُودْ

Waʾin wāfā sanā al-ḥibbi fakhayyim bi-al-ʿaqīq, Washaffiʿ bidhawī al-qurbi ʿasā ḥibbī yijūd

And if the beloved's radiance appears, pitch your tent at al-'Aqiq, and intercede through those near to him; perhaps my beloved will be generous.

وَخُذْ بِالْمُغْرَمِ الصَّبِّ لِأَعْتَابِ الْكِرَامْعَسَى أَنْ يَرْحَمُوا صَبِّي دُمُوعاً بِانْسِجَامْ

Wakhudh bi-al-mughrami aṣ-ṣabbi liʾaʿtābi al-kirām, ʿasā an yarḥamū ṣabbī dumūʿan binsijām

Take the enamoured lover to the thresholds of the noble; perhaps they will have mercy on my love's flowing tears,

وَيَرْضَوْنِي عَلَى عَيْبِي بِذَيَّاكَ الْمَقَامْوَيَجْلُو وَصْلُهُمْ كَرْبِي وَيَحْلُو لِي الْوُرُودْ

Wayarḍawnī ʿalā ʿaybī bidhayyāka al-maqām, Wayajlū waṣluhum karbī wayaḥlū lī al-wurūd

And accept me, with my faults, at that station, and their union will lift my grief and make my drinking sweet.

أَلَا يَا جِيرَةَ الشِّعْبِ صِلُوا هَذَا الْفَقِيرْوَرِقُّوا وَارْحَمُوا شَيْبِي فَهَا دَمْعِي غَزِيرْ

Alā yā jīrata ash-shiʿbi ṣilū hadhā al-faqīr, Wariqqū warḥamū shaybī fahā damʿī ghazīr

O neighbours of the ravine, show kindness to this poor one; be tender and pity my grey hair, for my tears are abundant.

وَغُضُّوا الطَّرْفَ عَنْ ذَنْبِي فَبِالْعَفْوِ الْكَبِيرْكَثِيرٌ فَازَ بِالْقُرْبِ وَإِطْلَاقِ الْقُيُودْ

Waghuḍḍū aṭ-ṭarfa ʿan dhanbī fabi-al-ʿafwi al-kabīr, Kathīrun fāza bi-al-qurbi waʾiṭlāqi al-quyūd

And overlook my sin, for through great pardon many have won nearness and the loosening of their chains.

صَلَاةُ الْحِبِّ لِلْحِبِّ عَلَى مَجْلَى السَّلَامْيُحْيِيهِ بِهَا رَبِّي نَعِيماً فِي الدَّوَامْ

Ṣalātu al-ḥibbi lilḥibbi ʿalā majlā as-salām, Yuḥyīhi bihā rabbī naʿīman fī ad-dawām

The blessing of the Beloved upon the beloved, where peace is made manifest, by which my Lord gives him life in everlasting bliss,

وَيَسْرِي فَيْضُهَا الْوَهْبِي إِلَى الْآلِ الْكِرَامْوَيُجْدِي شَاكِرُ الشُّرْبِ كَمَالاً فِي الْوُجُودْ

Wayasrī fayḍuhā al-wahbī ilā al-ʾāli al-kirām, Wayujdī shākiru ash-shurbi kamālan fī al-wujūd

And its bestowed flood flows to the noble family, and Shakir, who drinks of it, gains perfection in existence.
