Jammil Ahwalana Warham Wala Tamtahinna

Shaykh Abu Bakr bin Salim

Allāh Allāh yā Allāh Allāh Allāh yā Allāh, Jammil aḥwālanā warḥam walātamtaḥinnā

Allah, Allah, O Allah, Allah, Allah, O Allah, beautify our states, have mercy, and do not test us.

Yā akḥala al-ʿayn ḥayyi ad-dān layla samarnā, Nakkishi ad-dān min maghnā sulaymā alif maʿnā

O you with kohl-dark eyes, sing the dan on our night of conversation; strike up the dan from the dwelling of Sulayma, with a thousand meanings,

Min sanā al-barq liy laʾlaʾ ʿalā ṭūri sīnāʾ, Yawm mūsā qtabas minnuh wanaḥnu ṣṭalaynā

From the radiance of the lightning that flashed on Mount Sinai, the day Moses took a firebrand from it and we warmed ourselves.

Man naẓar minhu barqa ṣāḥ minhā waʾannā, Man samiʿ annata al-maḥzūn takhshāh yafnā

Whoever saw a flash of it cried out and moaned; whoever hears the grieving one's moan fears he will perish.

Yā Allāh irḥamhu wanẓur luh faʾinnuh muʿannā, Mithil dhūlāk lī dhāqūh min qabil kunnā

O Allah, have mercy on him and look upon him, for he is suffering, like those who tasted it before we came to be,

Ahil ḥaḍratih lī min shurbihim qad sharibnā, Walladhī ʿāṣarūnā mā darū īsh maʿnā

The people of His presence, whose drink we have drunk, while those of our own time did not know what was with us.

Min sharābi al-maḥabba wa-aṣ-ṣafā lī sharibnā, Waṣṭabaḥnā min aqdāḥi al-hawā waghtabaqnā

Of the drink of love and purity we have drunk, and taken our morning and evening draughts from the cups of love.

Kullu man kan yunkir dhā yajī yastamiʿnā, Yastamiʿ faḍlanā naṣṣa al-kitābi al-mubīnā

Whoever used to deny this, let him come and hear us; let him hear our virtue, the text of the clear Book.

Ahlu bayti an-nabiyy ahlu al-wafā wa-al-yaqīnā, Hum hum ahlu al-kisāʾ yā Allāh bihim jud ʿalaynā

The People of the Prophet's House are the people of faithfulness and certainty; they are the People of the Cloak; O Allah, through them be generous to us.

Hum hum ahlu al-kisāʾ yā Allāh bihim jud ʿalaynā, Bi-al-ʿawāfī fī ad-dārayn wa-al-kullu minnā

They are the People of the Cloak; O Allah, through them be generous to us with well-being in both worlds, for all of us.

Jammil aḥwālanā warḥam walātamtaḥinnā, Wa-aṣ-ṣalātu ʿalā ḥmad mā ghafat kullu ʿaynā

Beautify our states, have mercy, and do not test us; and blessings upon Ahmad as long as any eye sleeps.
