Jaliyat al-Kadar

Jafar al-Barzanji

Badriyyatun wāfat biburhānin bahar, Uḥudiyyatun fī sardihā sirrun ẓahar

A poem of Badr that has come with a dazzling proof, a poem of Uhud in whose recital a secret has appeared.

Jamaʿat liʾasmāʾi al-ladhīna samaw dhurā, Matni al-ʿulā fī al-majdi min ṣaḥbin ghurar

It gathers the names of those who climbed the summits of the heights of glory, radiant Companions.

Juniyat fawākihuhā al-janiyyatu min janā, Badriyyatin uḥudiyyatin ṭābat thamar

Its fresh fruits were gathered from the harvest of the people of Badr and Uhud, whose fruit is sweet.

Sāqī bawāsiqihā an-naḍīdati jaʿfarun, Ṣinwu al-ladhī adnā janāhā wakhtabar

The one who waters its tall, laden palms is Ja'far, brother of the one who brought its harvest near and tested it.

Lakin mina an-nisabi ash-shahīrati jurridat, Fī jullihā litakūna awjaza mukhtaṣar

But it has been stripped of the well-known lineages for the most part, to be the briefest of summaries.

Fanathartu kulla smin bihā biʿalāmatin, Qurinat bidhikri abīhi tughnī man naẓar

So I have set out each name in it with a mark, joined with mention of his father, sufficient for whoever looks.

Famuhājiriyyuhum ʿlamanhu bi mīmihi, Wakadhā bi aw awsiyyahum fī al-muntathar

Mark their Emigrants with a mim, and likewise their Aws with an alif, in the list;

Wa-al-khazrajiyya bi khāʾihi wakadhā ash-shahī, Du bi shīnihi min fawqi naẓmin mubtakar

The Khazraji with a kha', and likewise the martyr with a shin, above an original verse.

Lillāhi qawmun qad ḥubuw bifaḍiylatin, Qaṭaʿuw bihā aṭmāʿa aqwāmin ukhar

How wondrous a folk who were granted a virtue by which they cut off the hopes of other folk!

Fabakhin lahum fa-al-lahu qad qāla ʿmaluw, Mā shiʾtumu fa-adh-dhanbu minkum mughtafar

Bravo to them! For Allah has said: "Do whatever you wish, for your sins are forgiven."

Manẓuwmatun sharafan samat biniẓāmihim, Wasanan waqad summiyat bi jāliyati al-kadar

A poem raised high in honour and radiance by their being strung in it, and it has been named "The Dispeller of Trouble".

Ḥiṣnun ḥaṣiynun min khuṭūbin awjalat, Man yastajir fī al-muʿḍilāti bihā yujar

An impregnable fortress against frightening calamities; whoever seeks protection through it in hardships is protected.

Qad jurribat bayna al-ʾanāmi tilāwatan, Ayḍan waḥamlan fī al-ʾiqāmati wa-as-safar

It has been tried among people in recitation, and also by carrying it, at home and on journeys.

Falakam bihā aghnā faqiyran dhū an-nadā, Walakam bihā ʿabdan kasīran qad jabar

How often by it the Generous has enriched the poor, and how often by it He has mended a broken servant!

Wakhatamtuhā mutawassilan bibaqiyyati al-, Aṣḥābi ijmālan wasādātin khiyar

I have sealed it seeking a means through the rest of the Companions in general, and the chosen masters,

Wa-at-tābiʿiyna lahum kadhāka aʾimmatun, Lisharīʿati al-hādī al-mumajjadi hum wazar

And their Followers likewise, imams who are the bulwark of the law of the glorified guide.

Fanhaḍ ilayhā in kuribta bikurbatin, Yawman walāzimhā al-ʿashāyā wa-al-bukar

So rise to it if you are afflicted with distress one day, and keep to it evening and morning.

Wabdaʾ biʾawwali shāfiʿin wamushaffaʿin, Ṭāhā al-murajjā al-muṣṭafā khayri al-bashar

Begin with the first intercessor whose intercession is accepted, Taha, the hoped-for, the Chosen One, best of humanity,

Ghibba ath-thanāʾi ʿalā al-muhaymini wa-aṣ-ṣalā, Ti ʿalā ar-rasuwli waqul binaẓmin ka-ad-durar

After praising the Guardian and blessing the Messenger, and say in verse like pearls,

ʿālin waghālin dhī qawāfin jammatin, Rāʾiyyatin min kāmilin ʿadhbin zakhar

Lofty and precious, of abundant rhymes, rhyming in ra', in the sweet, overflowing kamil metre:

Rabbī bisayyidinā muḥammadin al-ʾabarr, Khayri al-bariyyati man bihi sharafat muḍar

"My Lord, by our master Muhammad, the most righteous, the best of creation, through whom Mudar was honoured,

Grant him peace and blessings as long as the east wind blows, the purest blessings, unending and boundless.
