Ila Arafati Allahi Ya Khayra Za'ir
Ahmad Shawqi
Ilā ʿarafāti Allāhi yā khayra zāʾirin, ʿalayka salāmu Allāhi fī ʿarafāti
To the Arafat of Allah, O best of visitors! Upon you be the peace of Allah at Arafat.
Wayawma tuwallā wujhata al-bayti nāḍiran, Wasīma majālī al-bishri wa-al-qasamāti
And on the day you turn toward the House, radiant, handsome of feature and glowing with joy,
ʿalā kulli ufqin bi-al-ḥijāzi malāʾikun, Tazuffu taḥāyā Allāhi wa-al-barakāti
On every horizon of the Hijaz there are angels bringing the greetings and the blessings of Allah.
Idhā ḥudiyat ʿīsu al-mulūki faʾinnahum, Liʿīsika fī al-baydāʾi khayru ḥudāti
When the camels of kings are driven on with song, the angels are the best of drivers for your camels in the desert.
Ladā al-bābi jibrīlu al-ʾamīnu birāḥihi, Rasāʾilu raḥmāniyyatu an-nafaḥāti
At the gate stands Gabriel the Trustworthy, holding in his palm messages fragrant with the breath of the Most Merciful.
Wafī al-kaʿbati al-gharrāʾi ruknun muraḥḥibun, Bikaʿbati quṣṣādin warukni ʿufāti
In the radiant Ka'ba a corner welcomes one who is a Ka'ba for seekers and a pillar for the needy.
Wamā sakaba al-mīzābu māʾan waʾinnamā, Afāḍa ʿalayka al-ʾajra wa-ar-raḥamāti
The waterspout did not pour down water; rather, it poured reward and mercies upon you.
Wazamzamu tajrī bayna ʿaynayka aʿyunan, Mina al-kawthari al-maʿsūli munfajirāti
And Zamzam flows before your eyes in springs gushing forth from the honey-sweet Kawthar.
Wayarmūna iblīsa ar-rajīma fayaṣṭalī, Washānīka nīrānan mina al-jamarāti
They stone Iblis the accursed, and he burns, along with your enemy, in the fire of the pebbles.
Yuḥayyīka ṭaha fī maḍājiʿi ṭuhrihi, Wayaʿlamu mā ʿālajta min ʿaqabāti
Taha greets you from his pure resting place, and knows the obstacles you have overcome.
Wayuthnī ʿalayka ar-rāshidūna biṣāliḥin, Warubba thanāʾin min lisāni rufāti
The Rightly Guided Caliphs praise your good deeds; and how many a praise comes from the tongue of the departed!
Laka ad-dīnu yā rabba al-ḥajīji jamaʿtahum, Libaytin ṭahūri as-sāḥi wa-al-ʿaraṣāti
Religion is Yours, O Lord of the pilgrims; You gathered them to a House pure in its courtyards and open spaces.
Arā an-nāsa aṣnāfan wamin kulli buqʿatin, Ilayka ntahaw min ghurbatin washatāti
I see people of every kind, from every land, who have come to You from exile and dispersion.
Tasāwaw falā al-ʾansābu fīhā tafāwutun, Ladayka walā al-ʾaqdāru mukhtalifāti
They are made equal: lineage makes no difference before You, nor do ranks differ.
ʿanat laka fī at-turbi al-muqaddasi jabhatun, Yadīnu lahā al-ʿātī mina al-jabahāti
A brow bowed to You in the holy dust, a brow to which the proudest brows submit,
Munawwiratun ka-al-badri shammāʾu ka-as-suhā, Watukhfaḍu fī ḥaqqin waʿinda ṣalāti
Shining like the full moon, lofty as the star Suha, yet lowered only for what is right and in prayer.
Wayā rabbi law sakhkharta nāqata ṣāliḥin, Liʿabdika mā kānat mina as-salisāti
O Lord, had You subjected the she-camel of Salih to Your servant, she would not have been an easy ride.
Wayā rabbi hal sayyāratun aw maṭāratun, Fayadnū baʿīdu al-bīdi wa-al-falawāti
O Lord, is there no car or airship, that the far desert and the wilderness might be brought near?
Wayā rabbi hal tughnī ʿani al-ʿabdi ḥajjatun, Wafī al-ʿumri mā fīhi mina al-hafawāti
O Lord, will a pilgrimage avail Your servant, when his life holds all the lapses that it holds?
Watashhadu mā ʾādhaytu nafsan walam aḍir, Walam abghi fī jahrī walā khaṭarātī
You bear witness that I never hurt a soul or did harm, nor sought wrong openly or in my secret thoughts.
Walā ghalabatnī shiqwatun aw saʿādatun, ʿalā ḥikmatin ʾātaytanī waʾanāti
Neither misfortune nor good fortune ever overcame me against the wisdom and forbearance You gave me.
Walā jāla illā al-khayru bayna sarāʾirī, Ladā suddatin khayriyyati ar-raghabāti
Only good has moved within my secret heart, at a court whose every wish is for good.
Walā bittu illā kabni maryama mushfiqan, ʿalā ḥussadī mustaghfiran liʿidātī
I never spent a night but like the son of Mary, compassionate toward those who envy me, asking forgiveness for my enemies.
Walā ḥummilat nafsun hawan libilādihā, Kanafsiya fī fiʿlī wafī nafathātī
No soul was ever made to bear such love for its homeland as mine, in my deeds and in my verses.
Waʾinnī walā mannun ʿalayka biṭāʿatin, Ujillu waʾughlī fī al-furūḍi zakātī
And I, without counting any obedience as a favour to You, hold my alms in the highest regard among the obligations.
Uballighu fīhā wahya ʿadlun waraḥmatun, Wayatrukuhā an-nussāku fī al-khalawāti
I am diligent in it, for it is justice and mercy, while ascetics neglect it in their seclusion.
Waʾanta waliyyu al-ʿafwi famḥu bināṣiʿin, Mina aṣ-ṣafḥi mā sawwadtu min ṣafaḥātī
You are the Master of pardon, so erase with the pure white of forgiveness what I have blackened of my pages.
Waman taḍḥaki ad-dunyā ilayhi fayaghtarir, Yamut kaqatīli al-ghīdi bi-al-basamāti
Whoever the world smiles upon, and is deceived, dies like one slain by the smiles of beauties.
Warakbin kaʾiqbāli az-zamāni muḥajjalin, Karīmi al-ḥawāshī kābiri al-khuṭuwāti
Many a caravan, bright as the coming of good fortune, noble in its ranks and proud in its strides,
Yasīru biʾarḍin akhrajat khayra ummatin, Wataḥta samāʾi al-waḥyi wa-as-suwarāti
Travels through a land that brought forth the best of nations, beneath the sky of revelation and of the suras,
Yufīḍu ʿalayhā al-yumna fī ghadawātihi, Wayuḍfī ʿalayhā al-ʾamna fī ar-rawaḥāti
Pouring blessing upon it in its mornings, and spreading safety over it in its evenings.
Idhā zurta yā mawlāya qabra muḥammadin, Waqabbalta mathwā al-ʾaʿẓumi al-ʿaṭirāti
When you visit, my master, the tomb of Muhammad, and kiss the resting place of the fragrant bones,
Wafāḍat maʿa ad-damʿi al-ʿuyūnu mahābatan, Liʾaḥmada bayna as-sitri wa-al-ḥujurāti
And eyes overflow with tears in awe of Ahmad, between the curtain and the chambers,
Waʾashraqa nūrun taḥta kulli thaniyyatin, Waḍāʿa arījun taḥta kulli ḥaṣāti
And light shines beneath every mountain pass, and fragrance spreads beneath every pebble
Limuẓhiri dīni Allāhi fawqa tanūfatin, Wabānī ṣurūḥi al-majdi fawqa falāti
For the one who made Allah's religion prevail over the desert, and built the towers of glory upon the wilderness,
Faqul lirasūli Allāhi yā khayra mursalin, Abuththuka mā tadrī mina al-ḥasarāti
Then say to the Messenger of Allah: "O best of messengers, I pour out to you the sorrows that you know.
Shuʿūbuka fī sharqi al-bilādi wagharbihā, Kaʾaṣḥābi kahfin fī ʿamīqi subāti
Your peoples in the East and the West of the lands are like the Companions of the Cave in a deep slumber.
Biʾaymānihim nūrāni dhikrun wasunnatun, Famā bāluhum fī ḥāliki aẓ-ẓulumāti
In their right hands are two lights, the Book and the Sunna, so why do they dwell in the blackest darkness?
Wadhalika māḍī majdihim wafakhārihim, Famā ḍarrahum law yaʿmalūna liʾātī
That is the past of their glory and their pride; what harm would it do them to work for what is to come?
Wahadhā zamānun arḍuhu wasamāʾuhu, Majālun limiqdāmin kabīri ḥayāti
This is an age whose earth and sky are a field for the bold and the great-hearted.
Mashā fīhi qawmun fī as-samāʾi waʾanshaʾū, Bawārija fī al-ʾabrāji mumtaniʿāti
In it a people have walked through the sky and built mighty warships with towers no one can storm."
Faqul rabbi waffiq lilʿaẓāʾimi ummatī, Wazayyin lahā al-ʾafʿāla wa-al-ʿazamāti
So say: "My Lord, grant my nation success in great deeds, and make action and resolve beloved to it."
