Idha Rumta An Tahya Saliman Min ar-Rada

Imam al-Shafii

Idhā rumta an taḥyā salīman mina ar-radā, Wadīnuka mawfūrun waʿirḍuka ṣayyinu

If you wish to live safe from ruin, with your religion intact and your honour protected,

Falā yanṭiqan minka al-lisānu bisawʾatin, Fakulluka sawʾātun walilnnāsi alsunu

Let your tongue never speak of anyone's shame, for you are all shames, and people have tongues.

Waʿaynāka in abdat ilayka maʿāʾiban, Fadaʿhā waqul yā ʿaynu lilnnāsi aʿyunu

And if your eyes show you the faults of others, turn from them and say: "O eye, people have eyes too."

Waʿāshir bimaʿrūfin wasāmiḥ mani ʿtadā, Wadāfiʿ walakin billatī hiya aḥsanu

Live with kindness, forgive whoever wrongs you, and repel evil, but with what is better.
