O you who are far from me yet dwell within my heart, answer the one whose cry has filled every quarter.
Ajib man tawallāhu al-hawā fīka wamḍi fī, Fuʾādiya mā yahwā al-hawā wayashāʾuhu
Answer one whom love for you has taken over, and carry out in my heart whatever love wishes and wills.
Banā al-ḥubbu fī wasṭi al-fuʾādi manāzilan, Falillahi bānin fāqa ṣunʿan bināʾuhu
Love has built dwellings in the midst of the heart; how wondrous a builder whose building excels in craft!
Biḥukmi al-walā jarradtu qaṣdī waḥabbadhā, Mawālin arāḥa al-qalba minhu walāʾuhu
By the rule of loyalty I made my aim single; and how excellent is a master whose loyalty gives rest to the heart!
Mariḍtu fakāna adh-dhikru burʾan liʿillatī, Fayā ḥabbadhā dhikran liqalbī shifāʾuhu
I fell ill, and remembrance was the cure for my illness; how excellent a remembrance whose healing is for my heart!

Idhā ʿalima al-ʿushshāqu dāʾi faqul lahum, Faʾinna liqā aḥbābi qalbī dawāʾuhu
If the lovers know my illness, then tell them that meeting the beloveds of my heart is its cure.
Ayā rāḥilan balligh ḥabībī risālatan, Biḥarfin mina al-ʾashwāqi yaḥlū hijāʾuhu
O traveller, take a message to my beloved, written in letters of longing, sweet to spell.
Wahayhāta an yalqā al-ʿadhūlu ilā al-ḥashā, Sabīlan sawāʾun madḥuhu wahijāʾuhu
Far be it for the blamer to find his way to my heart; his praise and his satire are the same.
Fuʾādī bikhayri al-mursalīna muwallaʿun, Waʾashrafu mā yaḥlū lisamʿī thanāʾuhu
My heart is devoted to the best of the messengers, and the noblest thing sweet to my ears is his praise.
Raqā fī al-ʿulā wa-al-majdi ashrafa rutbatin, Bimabdāhu ḥāra al-khalqu kayfa ntihāʾuhu
He rose in loftiness and glory to the noblest rank; creation is bewildered at his beginning, so how at his end?

Idhā rumtu katma al-ḥubbi zādat ṣabābatī, Fasiyyāni ʿindī baththuhu wakhafāʾuhu
When I try to hide my love, my yearning increases, so revealing it and hiding it are the same to me.
Ajib yā ḥabība al-qalbi daʿwata shayyiqin, Shakā lafḥa nārin qad ḥawathā ḥashāʾuhu
Answer, O beloved of the heart, the call of one who longs, who complains of the scorching fire his heart contains.
Wamur ṭayfaka al-maymūna fī ghaflati al-ʿidā, Yamurru biṭarfin zāda fīka bukāʾuhu
And let your blessed phantom, while the enemies are unaware, pass by an eye whose weeping for you has grown.
Liya Allāhu min ḥubbin taʿassara waṣfuhu, Walillahi amrī wa-al-qaḍāʾu qaḍāʾuhu
Allah is my help against a love whose description is hard, and my affair is Allah's, and the decree is His decree.
Fayārabbi sharrifnī biruʾyati sayyidī, Waʾajli ṣadā al-qalbi al-kathīri ṣadāʾuhu

Waballigh ʿaliyyan mā yarūmu mina al-liqā, Biʾashrafi ʿabdin jullu qaṣdī liqāʾuhu
And grant 'Ali what he seeks of meeting the noblest servant, whose meeting is my whole aim.
ʿalayhi ṣalātu Allāhi māhabbati aṣ-ṣabā, Wamā aṭraba al-ḥādī faṭāba ḥudāʾuhu
Upon him be the blessings of Allah as long as the east wind blows, and the camel-driver delights and his song is sweet,
Maʿa al-ʾāli wa-al-ʾaṣḥābi mā qāla munshidun, Huwa an-nūru yahdī al-ḥāʾirīna ḍiyāʾuhu
With the family and the Companions, as long as a singer says: "He is the light whose radiance guides the perplexed."
