Furu'un Samat bi-l-Majdi Min Dawhati al-'Ulya
Abu Bakr ibn Shihab al-Alawi
Furūʿun samat bi-al-majdi min dawḥati al-ʿulyā, Lahā aṣ-ṣabbu yaṣbū lā lihindin walā mayyā
Branches that soared in glory from the lofty tree, for which the lover yearns, and not for Hind or Mayya.
Faʾakrim bihā min dawḥatin ṭāba aṣluhā, Wamin salsabīli al-waḥyi ṭāba lahā as-suqyā
How noble a tree, whose root is pure, and sweet is its watering from the Salsabil of revelation!
Zakā turbuhā fī rabwati al-majdi fantahat, Ilayhā maʿālī qismayi ad-dīni wa-ad-dunyā
Its soil was pure on the hill of glory, and to it came the heights of both realms, religion and the world.
Waṭābat liṭībi al-ʾaṣli aghṣānuhā al-latī, Bibahjatihā tazhū kaʾan labisat washyā
Its branches are fine from the fineness of its root, gleaming in their splendour as though clad in embroidered robes.
Waʾarraja arjāʾa al-bilādi waḍawwaʿa al-, ʿawālima min azhārihā aṭ-ṭību wa-ar-rayyā
The fragrance of its blossoms has perfumed every corner of the lands, and spread its sweetness through the worlds.
Wahal athmarat illā quṭūfan janiyyatan, Bihā anfusu al-mawtā bidāʾi al-hawā taḥyā
Has it borne any fruit but freshly gathered clusters by which souls dead from the sickness of love come to life?
Sarā sirruhā fī al-kāʾināti waqāranat, Kamā akhbara al-mukhtāru fī hadyihā al-waḥyā
Its secret has flowed through all creation, and, as the Chosen One told us, it has been joined with the Revelation in guidance.
Idhā shtadda qayẓu an-nāʾibāti ʿalā al-warā, Taghashshāhumu min ẓillihā wārifu al-ʾafyā
When the scorching heat of misfortune bears down on mankind, the broad shade of its branches covers them.
Hiya al-ʿiṣmatu al-kubrā liman ḥāma ḥawlahā, Mina al-ghummati as-sawdāʾi wa-al-fitnati ad-dahyā
It is the greatest protection for whoever circles round it from the black affliction and the calamitous trial.
Walā gharwa fastimdāduhā min muḥammadin, Ajalli al-warā qadran waʾaḥsanihim hadyā
No wonder, for its supply comes from Muhammad, the greatest of mankind in rank and the finest in guidance.
Aqāma lahā baytan mina al-majdi shāmikhan, Wawarrathahā nashra al-maʿārifi wa-aṭ-ṭayyā
He raised for it a towering house of glory, and made it heir to the spreading and the folding of knowledge,
Wamin ḥaydarin aʿnī bna fāṭimata al-ladhī, Idhā ṣāla lam yughlab waʾin qāla lam yaʿyā
And from Haydar, I mean the son of Fatima, who, when he attacked, was never defeated, and when he spoke, never faltered,
Wafāṭima wa-ar-rayḥānatayni waman jarā, Mina an-nasli jarya al-ʾaṣli akrim bihi jaryā
And from Fatima, and the two sweet basils, and those who followed in their line the course of the root: how noble a course!
Ūlaʾika ḥizbu al-faḍli min ʾāli hāshimin, Bunātu al-ʿulā laysū ʿadiyyan walā ṭayyā
Those are the party of excellence from the family of Hashim, builders of eminence, not of 'Adi nor of Tayy.
Walā zāla minhum man bihi yuqtadā waʿan, Ḍalālatihim yahdī bihi al-khāliqu al-ʿumyā
There has never ceased to be among them one who is followed, through whom the Creator guides the blind away from their straying.
Waʿanhum ḥadīthu al-majdi yurwā wafīhimu, Mawārīthu ṭaha al-ʿilmu wa-al-ḥilmu wa-al-futyā
From them the tale of glory is told, and in them lies the inheritance of Taha: knowledge, forbearance and sound judgment.
ʿalayhim madāru al-ḥaqqi bal wabihadyihim, Tunāṭu umūru ash-sharʿi ithbātan aw nafyā
Upon them the truth turns; indeed, by their guidance the matters of the Law are decided, whether affirmed or denied.
ʿalayhim salāmu zāʾirin rūḥa man maḍā, Waʾazkā taḥiyyātin tuḥayyā bihā al-ʾaḥyā
Upon them be the peace of one who visits the spirits of those who have passed, and the purest greetings with which the living are greeted.
